UCD Choral Scholars

UCD Choral Scholars is an award winning student vocal ensemble that performs a wide repertoire including early choral works, contemporary works and lighter and more popular works. The scholars are young and gifted and come from a range of academic disciplines, with scholars from the faculties of Medicine, Science, Engineering and Arts. The annual concert series includes a Winter and Spring concert and performances at major UCD events.

Audition

The auditioning panel is convened in the first three weeks of the academic year and candidates are chosen on the basis of the information provided on the application form. Candidates should endeavor to give as much information as possible about their vocal and instrumental studies, past experiences in choirs and any information that might show that you would be a good candidate for an audition.

The audition will involve three elements:

  1. The performance of a song chosen by the candidate Some examples would be:
An Italian aria antiche e.g. Amarilli by Caccinni
Any French Chanson e.g. Les Bereaux by Fauré
A German Lied e.g. An Sylvia by Schubert
An Irish folk-song e.g. Sally Gardens
  2. A quick test of the vocal range of each candidate
  3. An examination of an understanding of music notation through the performance of a simple selection of an unseen excerpt from a choral work

There will be an opportunity to discuss the Terms and Conditions and the role of the UCD Choral Scholar. The panel may choose to call candidates back for another audition.

It is important to stress that we would like to receive application forms from a large number of candidates, and that we urge you to put aside any doubts and apply!

Please remember to fill out the application form with as much relevant detail as possible as auditions will be assigned only on the basis of the application form. To find out about UCD Choral Scholars, click here or contact Desmond Earley on 0862150461 /email: choralscholars@ucd.ie
