UCD Choral Scholars
The Choral Scholars is an internationally-acclaimed chamber choir of gifted student singers led by founding Artistic Director, Dr Desmond Earley, based at University College Dublin School of Music. Scholars come from various academic disciplines and commit to an intensive programme of choral study. Throughout each semester they receive intense vocal coaching, language instruction, and performance-practice studies.
With a classical focus, and an inspiration found in the music and literature of Ireland, the ensemble’s repertoire ranges from contemporary choral music to the re-imagining of Irish traditional song. The choir frequently performs with Ireland’s leading instrumentalists and orchestras, and has in recent years collaborated with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the European Union Chamber Orchestra. In touring The Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, the group has brought University College Dublin and its music to an international audience. The choir regularly broadcasts on television and radio. Notable recent appearances include Centenary (RTÉ), for which the ensemble provided the choral soundtrack. Concerts with Hans Zimmer and Ennio Morricone are among their recent prestigious collaborations.
In 2015 the choir released a disc of Irish choral music (with settings of Irish texts by Irish and international composers) for the UK label, Signum Records (listen here on Spotify).
'The Choral Scholars is one of the finest college choirs I have ever heard on my travels – such fabulous intonation, blend and musicality.’
Nigel Short, Artistic Director of the UK professional choir Tenebrae
Winning a UCD choral scholarship had a massive part to play in making my college life an incredible one. The music we made was of a standard I had never experienced before. I had no clue that membership of this ensemble would take me to Budapest, let alone on a ten-day tour of the USA! I made some of my greatest friends through my membership of UCD Choral Scholars, and the best part is that we hail from all over the country and are studying completely different things.

‘My membership of UCD Choral Scholars has afforded me the opportunity to perform music of many genres; to give the premiere performances of specially-commissioned works, and to sing stunning arrangements of our own traditional music with other student musicians. I have been fortunate enough to share music with audiences across the globe; the culmination of all this work is a recording of our very own disc for international release with the London label Signum Records. UCD Choral Scholars is truly a unique experience, one that I would recommend to anyone.’
