Prospective Students

  • Undergraduate Students

Music is one of the most pervasive and fundamental products of human culture; studying music can provide crucial insights into the human world. The School's undergraduate programme gives students the opportunity to study a wide diversity of music from a range of perspectives. In addition to core modules in the history, theory and analysis of Western classical music from the Middle Ages to the present day, we offer modules exploring music in non-Western cultures, traditional and popular music. Our fundamental aim is to provide students with a solid historical, cultural and theoretical understanding of music, whilst also fostering independent critical thinking.

We offer two separate programmes; a joint major, the Bachelor of Arts (DN517): and a single major, the Bachelor of Music (DN500). Both are three years and both must be applied for via the CAO system. The minimum CAO points in 2010 were 365.

  • Postgraduate Students

The School of Music is one of the leading centres for postgraduate musical study in Ireland. Our postgraduate programmes give students the opportunity to work with scholars of international standing in the School's core disciplines of historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory and analysis. The MMus degree furnishes students with the core intellectual tools for pursuing musical research, whilst also encouraging independent scholarship. The MPhil and PhD programmes afford the chance to complete a major research project under the supervision of an expert in the field. Students completing postgraduate degrees often pursue academic careers, or go on to jobs in arts administration, journalism, teaching, or a variety of other professions.
