Background

UCD invested in the start-up of the UCD Nanomedicine Centre in November 2011 to facilitate the key principal investigators (hereafter PIs) across the University whose research overlaps with the major topics of nanomedicine, as defined by the European Technology Platform (http://www.etp-nanomedicine.eu/public/about/objectives-mission). The four primary goals of the Nanomedicine Centre are:

  1. to develop disruptive, translational, collaborative research programmes across the themes of Nanomedicine, particularly diagnostics including imaging and drug delivery;
  2. to work with industry partners to identify and solve scientific and technical challenges in nanomedical science;
  3. to lead the improvement in understanding the societal implications of nanomedical discoveries and products; and,
  4. to facilitate training of multidisciplinary students and postdoctoral researchers able to work in academic and industrial Nanotechnology labs.

The Scientific Director of the UCD Nanomedicine Centre is Professor Gil Lee,Stokes Professor of Physical Chemistry in the School of Chemistry & Chemical Biology Science Centre, and Fellow in the Conway Institute of Biomolecular & Biomedical Research. Professor Lee has a strong track record in attracting funds through research programmes and consultancy to advance knowledge about force in molecules and cells and biosensing. He has successfully patented 7 innovations and co-created a start-up venture, MagSense Life Sciences, Inc., that specialises in achieving faster biological separation using superparamagnetic particles for industrial partners.
