Conference: Newman and Darwin: Twin Towers or Polar Opposites

This groundbreaking conference, to be held at Newman House, will highlight the significance of Newman’s via media view on Charles Darwin and On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection for theology’s relationship with the natural sciences.  In that part of Newman’s Dublin writings which has come to be published as Part 2 of The Idea of a University viz. University Subjects: Letters and Essays”, Newman wrote two seminal essays: “Christianity and Physical Science”; and “Christianity and Scientific Investigation”.  These two hitherto neglected texts make a signal contribution to the current, overheated and polarised debate between theologians and scientists.
Confirmed speakers include Darwin’s great-great-granddaughter the renowned poet Ruth Padel. The proceedings of the conference will be published in the form of a major book with a leading academic publisher, thereby making an impact of international reach.
More details concerning the date(s) of the conference, together with a conference program, will be made available in the coming weeks.
