Thursday 2 September 2010. UCD Remembering Newman: The Dream of Gerontius
This presentation of The Dream of Gerontius celebrates the link between John Henry Newman and University College Dublin and marks the occasion of the beatification of Newman by Pope Benedict XVI in England in September. Monday 13 September 2010. Modernity and Metaphysics: Between Newman's Grammar of Assent and Leo XIII's Aeterni Patris
Joseph O'Leary, Professor of English Literature, Sophia University, Tokyo delivers his lecture "Modernity and Metaphysics: Between Newman's Grammar of Assent (1870) and Leo XIII's Aeterni Patris (1879)" as part of the UCD Remembering Newman series of events.
13-17 September 2010. UCD Remembering John Henry Newman: Newman House Exhibition
In September 2010 John Henry Newman becomes the first English non-martyr to be beatified since the reformation. To mark this occasion Newman House, in conjunction with the UCD International Centre for Newman Studies, will host an exhibition of Newman artworks and artifacts from UCD Library Special Collections and UCD Archives. Tours of Newman House will also be available on Monday 13th, Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th September, at 1:30pm. To book a place on the tour please contact Newman House on 01 4779810. 26 September 2010. UCD Remembering John Henry Newman: Ecumenical Service
Broadcast on RTE 1 television Ecumenical celebration of John Henry Newman following his beatification on 19th September 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. This service of the word will be led by Gillian Kingston, Methodist Presbyterian Chaplin, UCD Chaplaincy Team, who will be joined by staff and students of UCD including Dr. Pádraic Conway, Vice-President for University Relations and Director of the International Centre for Newman Studies and Dr. Andrew Pierce, Irish School of Ecumenics, TCD. 29 September 2010. UCD Remembering John Henry Newman: Newman in Dublin lecture course
In the magnificent surroundings of Newman House, former home of the Catholic University of Ireland, this course will explore the fascinating story of John Henry Newman’s educational project. We will trace the progress of the Catholic University of Ireland, which later became UCD, through Newman's writings and tours of the actual buildings. Newman’s concept of liberal education will be put in its historical context and we will discuss its relevance for today.
Tutor Details: Angelo Bottone is an associate lecturer at the School of Arts of the Dublin Business School, where he teaches Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Theories of Knowledge and Philosophy of Science. Fee: €140 (8 weeks). Click here for further details.
