UCD psychologist is editor-in-chief of new sport psychology journal

Professor Aidan Moran, UCD School of Psychology, is the inaugural editor-in-chief of the academic new peer-reviewed journal International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology (IRSEP).

The journal, to be published in 2008 by Routledge/Taylor and Francis (Oxford), will fill a major gap in international psychology research by publishing substantial critical reviews of the scientific literature on topics in sport and exercise psychology and allied domains.

IRSEP will especially focus on topics at the interface between sport psychology, cognition, perception and neuroscience. It will also evaluate the rise of emerging inter-disciplinary topics such as motor cognition and the relationship between skilled perception and action.

Speaking about the journal, Professor Moran said, “The knowledge-base in the field of sport and exercise psychology is expanding very rapidly and there is an urgent need for a journal that provides in-depth reviews, analysis, and research synopses. I am honoured to lead the editorial board in this timely addition to our academic literature.”

Assisting Professor Moran are five associate editors and a 24-person international editorial board, which includes Dr Nuala Brady, UCD School of Psychology. Professor Stephen Kosslyn (Harvard), the world’s leading expert on the neuroscience of mental imagery, is also on the editorial board. He will visit Psychology Research Laboratory in August and will also deliver an open lecture on presentations on Friday 24 August.

Professor Moran is director of the Psychology Research Laboratory and chair of the Cognitive Research Group, UCD School of Psychology. He is a member of the editorial boards of Sport and Exercise Psychology Review (published by British Psychological Society) and the Irish Journal of Psychology (published by Psychological Society of Ireland). He is also a psychology consultant to many of Ireland’s leading athletes and teams.
