Death, Burial and the Afterlife seminar series

Death is one of the main driving forces of human endeavour; much of what we do and value is based on the knowledge that our time on this planet is limited – and that we do not know how much of it we have left. It is therefore a central theme in disciplines like the arts, literature, music, philosophy, theology, sociology, psychology, archaeology, but also law, business, or medicine.

The seminar series “Death, Burial and the Afterlife” (organised by the research strand of the same name) highlights the role death has played in past and contemporary societies, presents results of recent research and shows the many ways in which it has been approached by different disciplines.

The first seminar, on Wednesday 28 January 2009, is from Professor Allan Kellehear (Centre for Death & Society, University of Bath), whose seminar is entitled “A Short History of Death, Dying and Bereavement.”

Professor Kellehear has published widely in the areas of sociology of death and palliative care; his book publications include A Social History of Dying (Cambridge University Press, 2007), Compassionate Cities: Public health and end of life care (Routledge 2005) and Experiences Near Death: Beyond medicine and religion (Oxford University Press, New York, 1996).

The seminars will be presented on the last Wednesday of the month during term time, stretching from January 2009 until April 2010. Future seminars will include:

  • Wednesday, 25 February 2009
Professor Gabriel Cooney (UCD School of Archaeology http://www.ucd.ie/archaeology/index.html )
“Death and the Ancestors in Irish Prehistory”

  • Wednesday, 25 March 2009
Dr Philip Cottrell (UCD School of Art History & Cultural Policy http://www.ucd.ie/arthistory/index.html )
“‘John Donne, Undone, Redone’ – John Donne’s Memorial Monument in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London”

  • Wednesday, 29 April 2009
Dr Pádraic Conway (UCD Vice-President for University Relations & Director of the UCD International Centre for Newman Studies)
“Empty Tombs and Apparitions: A Reflection on the Theological Significance of the Exhumation of the Remains of John Henry Newman”
