Innovation Dublin 2011

Innovation Dublin 2011, runs from 17 October until 18 November, and the overarching theme of this year’s festival is Innovation by Design. The objective of this year’s festival is to harness creativity, to make change happen and to drive innovation. 

Some of the UCD organised or hosted events in the Innovation Dublin 2011 programme include:

Wednesday 26 October: NovaUCD ‘Entrepreneurs Live!’ seminar

Patrick Farrelly, Aqua-Nu Filtration System. Organised by NovaUCD in association with the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board, this seminar will address setting-up and running a company in challenging times.

 

Thursday 27 October: Innovation Cities Roadshow - Breakfast Brain Snacks for Hungry Business Managers

Hosted by UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, the Innovation Cities Roadshow, Dublin, will impart expert insights and practical ideas on how you can develop your business performance.

 

Tuesday 1 November: FuturICT

The FuturICT flagship proposal intends to unify hundreds of the best scientists in Europe, with the support of all the Irish universities, in a ten year 1 billion EUR program to explore social life on earth and everything it relates to.

 

Monday 7 & Tuesday 8 November: Project Inaugural Meeting - Transitioning to Urban Resilience and Sustainability (TURaS)

The TURaS project brings together urban communities, researchers, local authorities and SMEs to research, develop, demonstrate and disseminate transition strategies and scenarios to enable European cities and their rural interfaces to build vitally-needed resilience in the face of significant sustainability challenges.

 

Tuesday 8 November: Humanities and Innovation - Collaborative innovation networks: how to be interdisciplinary

Professor Michael Shanks, visiting professor in digital humanities at UCD Humanities Institute, is Director of Stanford University's Humanities Lab and CARS (Center for Automotive Research at Stanford).

 

Wednesday 9 November: NovaUCD ‘Entrepreneurs Live!’ seminar

Jim Breen, Pulse Learning and Trigrandprix.com. Organised by NovaUCD in association with the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board, this seminar will address setting-up and running a company in challenging times.

 

Wednesday 9 November: CSET Thesis in Three

Over 20 students from Science Foundation Ireland-funded Centres for Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) present their doctoral research in a series of concise, rapidly paced talks, in plain English, consisting of 3 slides of precisely 1 minute each.

 

Wednesday 9 November: Design and the Humanities - What it is to be human: archaeological perspectives on human creativity

Professor Michael Shanks, visiting professor in digital humanities at UCD Humanities Institute, is Director of Stanford University's Humanities Lab and CARS (Center for Automotive Research at Stanford).

 

Thursday 10 November: Teams that Have Fun Get More Done!

Innovation Academy @ UCD will be celebrating Innovation Dublin with a range of events for Staff, PhDs and researchers in UCD's O'Reilly Hall. The event is entitled focuses on effective teams and innovation. There will be a range of guest speakers and a variety of events, including a 'Build-A-Bike' challenge, a Lego film making challenge and a Ceile.

 

Wednesday 16 November: NovaUCD ‘Entrepreneurs Live!’ seminar

Liam Kelly, Nua Light. Organised by NovaUCD in association with the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board, this seminar will address setting-up and running a company in challenging times.

 

Wednesday 16 November: Creative Design Solutions by 1st Year Students in UCD

An exhibition celebrating and displaying students’ work undertaken as part of a ‘Creativity in Design’ module. The module provides an active-learning design experience for students through which they develop their observation skills, problem solving skills and their creative design potential.

 

Wednesday 16 November: UCD Imagine Science Film Festival Launch

The UCD Imagine Science Film Festival is a platform for Irish innovators across the spectrum of science and creativity. The launch of the UCD Imagine Science Film Festival initiative will include a sneak preview of the screenings and events that will take place in 2012.

 

Thursday 17 November: NovaUCD 2011 Campus Company Development Programme Awards Evening

15 new ventures deliver a short ‘elevator pitch’ and three shortlisted ventures will present their business plans to an independent evaluation panel who select an overall winner. The event will also include an address from serial entrepreneur, Iain Mac Donald, CEO and Founder, SkillPages.

 

Thursday 17 November: Commemorating Daniel O'Connell in Dublin

A history of the O'Connell Monument in Dublin, the commission and the context. An examination of the sculptural detail and its place in sculpture in the city.
