UCD spin-out company wins international award for personalised content discovery solution for mobile portals

The NovaUCD spin-out company ChangingWorlds has received a ‘Deployed Application Award’ from the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). The award, which recognises successful practical & commercial applications of Artificial Intelligence technologies in industry, was presented at the nineteenth annual AAAI conference which took place in Vancouver in July.

Professor Barry Smyth from the UCD School of Computer Science and Informatics, one of the founders of Changing Worlds, presented the winning paper entitled: "Enabling Intelligent Content Discovery on the Mobile Internet." The paper describes how the ClixSmart portal personalization technology developed by ChangingWorlds has been deployed by leading mobile operators worldwide to deliver very significant portal usability benefits leading to increased portal usage and revenue growth.

The ClixSmart personalization engine is unrivalled in its ability to personalize content and enable intelligent content discovery methods over mobile which allows operators to deliver highly accessible, personalized mobile portals that meet individual subscriber needs. Over 40 mobile operators worldwide have deployed the ChangingWorlds ClixSmart technology.

and recognized experts worldwide in the field of Artificial Intelligence and the success he has achieved through his company ChangingWorlds in the application of AI in commercial deployments is to be applauded,” said William Cheetham, AAAI Conference Chair.

ChangingWorlds conducted much of its early research in the Smart Media Institute at University College Dublin, where Barry Smyth is Professor of Computer Science at the UCD School of Computer Science and Informatics. The company’s ongoing R&D is still based in NovaUCD, the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre at University College Dublin.
