For 216 years the Royal Irish Academy has been honouring Ireland's foremost academics by electing them as Members of the Academy on the eve of St Patrick's Day. On15th March 2003, ten scientists and ten scholars from the humanities and social sciences were elected.
Eight of the twenty new members elected are based in UCD. Trinity College, Dublin had three members elected whilst NUI, Galway and Queen's University, Belfast had two each elected. One new member was elected from UCC, DCU, RCSI, St Patrick's College, Drumcondra and Science Foundation Ireland.
The UCD academics elected from the humanities and social sciences are: Professor Pádraig Breatnach; Dr Howard Clarke; Professor Tom Garvin; Professor Declan Kiberd; Professor Dermot Moran; Professor William Nial Osborough and Professor Hugh Ridley. Professor Patrick Shannon, a scientist from UCD, was also honoured by the RIA.
Dr Michael Ryan, President of the Royal Irish Academy, said 'Ireland can be proud of the high standards achieved by its top scientists and scholars. They are of a high international calibre and can be compared favourably against the best in the world.
