What our Graduates say

Alan Buckley Director, Sipris Technologies
So far the MSc has given me tools to deal with Management problems, which I previously did not have, particularly in regards to organisational and financial decision making. One of the problems with the Irish Technology industry is that, in general, good Engineers are expected to make good managers without sufficient training. The MSc in Technology Management provides this training in a great location with excellent experienced Lecturers. It has given me more confidence in my decision-making! The associated NITM seminar series has also provided excellent content, with practitioners like Bob Tait and his Stage gating seminar being my highlight to date. The MSc has also provided me with a wide Network or new contacts, (my Classmates and Lecturers) in different Industries, with different relevant experiences. Taking on this course, though not easy, was definitely one of my better decisions.

John O'Neill Project Manager, Lucent Technologies
The MSc has made a difference to me personally. I feel it has opened up my mind to other ways of thinking and helped me to identify opportunities for myself.

Dermot Reynolds Technical Architect, Cognotec
The MSc course is ideal for technical professionals who wish to improve their breath of knowledge - particularly in the areas of innovation, new product development and general business concepts. It is very practical and the concepts and ideas can be applied directly to my daily work environment. The course is intensive, but has certainly been worth the effort to date.

Marie Moynihan Master Engineer, Ericsson
The MSc has helped my career by enabling me to get a more balanced view of financial and strategic sides of technology.

Thomas McCarthy Test Group Manager, Microsoft
I found that the content, class structure, teaching facilities and class participants were hugely beneficial to my personal and professional development. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending anyone involved in product, service or market development to do this degree. From the initial foundation course of Organizational Behaviour to Portfolio management, the course has been as enjoyable as it has been challenging.

Dr. Eddie Commins Technology Development Manager, Enterprise Ireland
The MSc programme has been hugely important in shaping the ideas and structure I can bring to managing an Enterprise Ireland team of Technology Management Advisers working with SME's to put more structure on their product and process development procedures.

Graeme Lowe Operations Manager, Polymer Development Centre
In my current company, we are undertaking an MBO, the course has benefited me greatly to this end, in the development of the business plan/case, conducting market research, structuring and executing R&D projects, and providing a clearer understanding of various business concepts/models. I would strongly recommend the course for people who are seriously considering embarking on a senior management role.

Dr. Sally Cudmore General Manager, Biosciences Institute, Cork
The MSc course was very useful to me in that it broadened my area of expertise and hence widened my career opportunities. Following the completion of the course I made a change in career from a research scientist into the area of research management, and I have found the learning from the course highly beneficial.

John O'Connell Manager Development & Support, Northern Trust
I was promoted to Manager of Development and Support in the Dublin office of Northern Trust after completing my MSc. in Technology Management. Completing the course in Technology management set me apart from the other applicants and I believe it was instrumental in the promotion.

Stephen Doak Forensic Scientist, Dept. of Justice, Equality & Law Reform
I was accepted to Henley Management College to their Doctor of Business Administration Programme after completing my MSc. in Technology Management. I am proud that NITM can be associated with meeting a part of Henley's highly competitive entry requirements. Doing the course gave me a robust business background for my further development in business knowledge.

Captain Raymond Kenny IT Procurement Officer, Defence Forces
The MSc was a very enjoyable and interesting course. This course has not contributed to my career progression as I am working in an area where there is no promotions, however it has given me the opportunity and the confidence to seek employment in other areas of the Defence Forces. I have gained in knowledge and experience from having completed this course.

Ian Butler Chief Development Officer, Transware Ltd.
The course was key to helping me establish the Product Development group at Transware.

Garrett Dee Centre Manager, AMT-Ireland
The MSc has played a critical part both in my career path and in support of my work. During the course of the MSc I was appointed to my current position. The fact that I was enrolled in the MSc was a critical success factor in getting the job. As a research and technology transfer manager, with a remit to commercialise UCC food research outputs, the learning gained from the MSc was entirely relevant, and a major resource.

Enda McDonnell Director of Engineering, Alchemy Software Development
I think there is no doubt that the MSc has helped me do a better job, it gives me a broader context in which to make decisions. I found it to be a fantastic course and refer to some of the ideas we covered on a regular basis. My role changed during the course and, considering that was to a director level position, I think the course helped me carry out tasks to the new level expected of me. The work I did on my thesis, for example, was well received and improved things at Alchemy.

Catherine Kiely Technical Consultant, Katherine Kiely Consulting
The MSc was very helpful to me in the work I was doing as Engineering Manager and in the consultancy in which I am now involved. It gave me a broader understanding of technical industry and the management of technical companies and indeed technical projects, which gives me more confidence in dealing with the non-technical aspects of my work.

Margaret Kennedy Commercialisation Specialist, NOVA - UCD
This course appealed to me with its comprehensive business foundation courses together with its appealing focus on technology and innovation; I felt that it would complement my current skills and qualifications (being from an engineering background) very well and would give an edge not necessarily provided by a standard MBA course. I think my expectations were exceeded. It is a highly interactive program - classes were very interesting - particularly when discussing other people's experiences in similar/different industries. The interaction with people from different companies/industries is a major benefit of the course, with representatives from both multinationals and indigenous corporations. The projects assigned were always relevant and the case studies slanted towards more technology/science based companies. The relevance and application was always evident. The course is presented in a very professional format and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I would certainly recommend this course to those who want to develop their business competencies in a technology/innovative/new product development environment, from whatever business sector. It's a well thought out, well-presented and timely course - covers all the necessary topics in a balanced way - it certainly exceeded my expectations and has removed limitations on career development options that may not have been possible before. Certainly it has allowed me and given me the confidence to successfully present new and innovative approaches to solving process, product and technology and people issues.

Alan Leddy Research Manager, Ericsson Systems Expertise Ltd.
In 1998 I was employed as a system architect in Ericsson Systems Expertise Ltd, Clonskeagh, Dublin and was concerned about our subsidiary's ability to manage technology projects and my possible contribution to such an internal competitive innovation process. I undertook the MSc program at the National Institute of Technology Management in UCD in order to help address this and give my career a further competitive advantage. To the best of my knowledge this is the only suitable program available in such a critical domain with such a strong reputation and relevant course content. The program was totally appropriate to the range of management roles and technical responsibilities within a large multinational like Ericsson Systems Expertise Ltd, especially during the current difficult trading conditions, where dynamic technology strategies are required not just for mandate enhancement but for ultimate survival. Relevant topics of particular interest (excluding all obvious overlaps with typical MBA courses) are organisation & innovation, technology strategy and product development. As a large software design organisation, these modules are very useful in shaping how we can approach the acquirement, development, commercialisation and deployment of technology based products and services.
My role today within Ericsson is as a senior manager of research reporting directly to the managing director. This increased responsibility came about as a result of the major project I undertook as part of the MSc and currently employees 8 professional researchers, who would otherwise not be engaged by Ericsson. Thus Ericsson Systems Expertise Ltd has acquired a new long-term competitive capability necessary for its existence within the multinational, particularly during current rationalisation processes. The Masters program definitely gave me the ability, framework and confidence to manage and contribute at this higher level within the organisation. This degree program is to be highly recommended to engineers and managers engaged in product development companies both SMEs or multinationals, who are interested in having the framework and experiences to lead their sections, departments, or companies towards acquiring and maintaining continuous innovation capabilities.

Pat Price EDS Consulting
My MSc has enabled me to get a better understanding of the dynamics and makeup of different industries within the technology sector. Having previously worked most of my career in the aerospace industry I was able to move into the IT industry applying both my experience within the aerospace industry and using the knowledge acquired during the MSc. I have been able to bring many of the ideas and approaches learned during the masters to my new organisation.

Eoghan Hanrahan Manager, Enterprise Ireland
I found the course extremely useful and beneficial. The knowledge gained has given me a valuable insight into the effective management of R&D projects from inception to completion and the policy issues surrounding R&D from an economic perspective.

Gerry Kelly Systems Architect, AOL Technologies
Wouldn't have got this job without it!! The MSc strongly influenced my choice of career direction and enabled me to pursue it when the opportunity arose.

Murtagh Murphy Director QA and R&D, Inamed Corp.
The MSc has certainly helped my progress to date in Inamed and has now positioned me to progress further. Much of the benefit has been learning the language of technology management.

Louis Corrigan Mobile Cohesion
I think the MSC is useful in 2 ways -
(i) as a qualification - so it instantly provides a frame of reference and level of credibility with others - before initially meeting them - I found this particularly useful as a person with a purely technical background when dealing with non technical people on the business side - e.g. Accountants, MBA's etc. I found this in dealing with people both inside my previous company (large multinational corporate) and externally. I'm sure that it helped, and would have helped further in my career progression with large corporates (had I chosen to follow that route) precisely because it gives others that frame of reference.
(ii) As a learning experience. For me the MSc was an invaluable learning experience. As somebody from a purely technical background I found it difficult to communicate with, or hold the attention of non-technical people for too long - however the MSc taught me a new language, through which I now can communicate with non-technical management. It has also helped to broaden my thought process - and have a more holistic view of the complete research/development/marketing/sales process, which is at the heart of any product business. My current career path has found me in a new start-up situation - so while the MSc hasn't directly helped me 'land the job' as such - it certainly has equipped me well to do it

Pat Scanlan Elk Solutions
The MSc has benefited me greatly in recent months as a networking facility with co graduates of the time. It is well recognised now in industry and I believe I have befitted from the guidelines set out in the course with respect to having a wider view of the issues concerning technological products. As someone making my own way in a very unstable high tech market, the earned wisdom from MSc and application of some of its knowledge in assisting my clients has been extremely valuable.

David McDonald VP Engineering, Intune Technologies
The MSc Tech Management has been very useful for the whole area of product development and product assessment and many of the concepts that I picked up during the course are being used routinely at Intune.

Colin McGookin Manufacturing Director, Waterford Crystal
It was a good course. A 'career refresher' that 'topped up the information tank', covering everything from essential business fundamentals to specific R + D and technology management - related current best practice.
