Masters in Innovation and Technology Management

The MSc is UCD's National Institute of Technology Management's major teaching program. More than 150 graduates have participated in this program which has run successfully on a part time basis in our Blackrock campus since 1998.

Program Objectives

At it's core Technology Management is about making innovation central in the organisation. The MSc is designed for experienced managers and technical specialists who will be responsible for fostering innovation and managing the commercialization process in technology intensive firms. The program focuses on the management of technological innovation for business advantage. It provides participants with a comprehensive skill set in developing the strategies, structures and systems needed for

* The effective commercialization of new products and services, logistics, business systems and production processes. * The creation, acquisition, development, protection and deployment of the technologies and knowledge bases embodied in products and processes.

Technology & Innovation Management is at the intersection of strategy, technology and operations.

Program Structure

It is an intensive two year program which is available as full-time or part time options described below:

Part Time Program Structure

The course is on a part-time basis, over a two year period of two semesters each year.

Five subjects are completed and examined each semester. In addition, students undertake a major project during the second year. The course takes
place on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Full Time Program Structure

This is an intensive two-year program run full time over the summer months. Ten subjects will be completed and examined each year. In addition, students undertake a major project during the second year.

The course consists of 20 modules, foundation and electives which will be made available from the following subject list:

Course Content

The program is designed to provide participants with the skill sets to

  • Integrate technology into the strategic objectives of the firm
  • Assess and evaluate technologies
  • Manage technology transitions
  • Manage technology transfer within and between organizations
  • Reduce new product development times
  • Increase the effectiveness of technical professionals
  • Organize for innovation

Positioning Technology and Innovation Management

Other subjects which are available as options include New Business Development, Organizational Change, Emerging Technologies.

In addition to the course work students will undertake an applied research project during year 2. This will offer students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and learned skills in addressing a business issue of special interest often enhancing their firms innovative capability.
