Study Abroad Programme
The Study Abroad Programme at UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems provides an exciting opportunity to advance your knowledge of nursing and midwifery while studying at one of Ireland’s leading universities. The aim of our school is to provide our students with the very best opportunities and supports to pursue studies in nursing, midwifery and to promote safe, efficient and person-centered professional practice. As the oldest university school of nursing and midwifery in Ireland we have played a leading role in the development of nursing and midwifery education, practice and research in Ireland. We offer four undergraduate programmes which provide entry to professional practice in general (adult) nursing, psychiatric nursing, children’s with general nursing, and midwifery. Studying at our school offers you the opportunity to meet other students from diverse cultures and many countries.
Facilities
The UCD Nursing and Midwifery courses are delivered in a state-of-the art learning environment. The Health Sciences Centre consists of top-class lecture facilities, a purpose-built clinical skills centre with interactive video equipment, library, information and computing resources and student resource rooms.
Students undertake clinical practice at national centres of excellence such as: St. Vincent’s University Hospital, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, St. John of God Hospital, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, the National Maternity Hospital and Our Lady’s Hospice.
Academic Research Centres
The UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems is unique among Irish nursing and midwifery schools in having two academic centres dedicated to the development of focused programmatic research in distinct fields:
The National Centre for the Protection of Older People is conducting new and groundbreaking research in the area of elder abuse and is already informing national social policy in the recognition of at-risk older people thereby raising awareness of elder abuse and protecting older people from the risk of maltreatment.
The UCD Irish Centre for Nursing and Midwifery History is an academic research centre, which has developed a programme of research examining aspects of the history of our professions in Ireland, including disciplinary development, institutional histories and histories of clinical practice.
The research produced in these centres informs teaching of subjects within the curriculum.
Subject Choices
Study Abroad students may select modules from a comprehensive range of undergraduate modules on offer in the school in the in the areas of nursing, midwifery, children's nursing and mental health. You may also select up to 2 modules from other university programmes.
Clinical opportunities
Clinical learning is organised into discrete modules delivered in certain instances in our partner hospitals and in the community services.

Study abroad students may enrol in a maximum of 30 ECTS credits per semester. One ECTS credit equates to about 20 hours of student effort. You may select 4 modules from the nursing programme and 2 from other programmes. Please ensure that there are no timetable clashes.
Assessment
Assessment is based on a combination of in-semester components such as, projects, term papers, clinical assessments and formal examinations. Study abroad students are expected to undertake all assessments in accordance with University regulations.
Credit Transfer
Students are advised to seek approval for modules before enrolling in UCD. At the end of the semester, UCD will send an official transcript to the home institution. Your home institution will decide on credits to be awarded for modules pursued in UCD. We will be pleased to provide full information on our modules to enable institutions to make decisions regarding the transfer of credits.
Eligibility
The minimum GPA is 3.00. In addition to completing the UCD on-line application process, a standard form of identification; e.g., a copy of passport, a transcript of academic record to date and a letter of recommendation from an academic referee should be sent to the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems Programme Office before the application deadline.
