What is Old People - Health & Social Care?
Older people: Health & Social Care is concerned with aspects of the health and care of older people and focuses on establishing reliable research evidence concerning older people in relation to their social and health profiles, their encounters with formal services, their experiences of informal care giving, their care needs and care outcomes in specific illnesses, and the effectiveness of new social and nursing interventions. In addition, it is also concerned with protecting vulnerable older people, and this particular element is conducted under the auspices of the National Centre for the Protection of Older People (NCPOP). What main areas of research are addressed?
A number of research projects are being conducted or have been recently completed in this field. These include:

  •         Profiling older people in relation to health service usage and social needs
  •         Older people’s encounters with health and social services
  •         Elder mistreatment
  •         Media representations of older people
  •         Ageing and age identity
  •         Social and nursing interventions in older population subsets
  •         Healthy ageing
  •         Social networks and experiences of loneliness

What research opportunities are available?
The School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems offers opportunities for PhD level research to suitable applicants. Students may study under the auspices of the NCPOP, or may present their own ideas for the study of health and social care for older people. Where does this research take place?
The research takes place at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. In addition, some elements of the research take place under the auspices of the National Centre for the Protection of Older People, which is an Academic Centre located at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems and involves collaboration with other UCD schools, including UCD School of Applied Social Science, UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science, UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy & Population Science and the UCD Geary Institute.
