Biography:
Over the past two decades, I have developed an expertise in the sociology of health and illness with a particular interest in sexuality, gender and adolescence. I have had over 60 articles published in leading peer-reviewed international journals, and my research on adolescent sexuality has been invoked to support decision-making on national legislation (Children First Bill 2012) and to inform the national strategy on children and youth affairs (2011-2014). My research has also been used by the World Health Organisation as evidence for gender responsive actions to prevent and manage adolescent pregnancy. In relation to research funding, I have won a number of nationally-competitive research awards as principal investigator, the most recent being a major national study of the sexual health and education needs of young people in care funded by the Health Services Executive Crisis Pregnancy Programme in conjunction with the HSE Children and Families Social Services Care Group. I have also engaged in collaborative studies at an international level. The most recent of these is a European Science Foundation international programme of research on the changing academic profession in Europe. The first of the publications from this programme of research emerged in Autumn 2012 and I have contributed to outputs both as a main author and a co-author. In addition, I have co-authored two books (Sociology for Health Professionals in Ireland, Institute of Public Administration, Dublin and Social Theory, Health & Healthcare, Palgrave Macmillan, London) co-edited a book, and have written numerous book chapters. I am a member of the Editorial Board of three international journals, namely, Journal of Women & Aging; Reflective Practice: International and Multidisciplinary Perspectives; and Nurse Education Today: International Journal for Healthcare Education. I am involved in an on-going international partnership with the University of Nottingham in developing a shared e-learning venture that allows for teaching resources to be shared through a virtual learning environment and allows students at various sites globally to dialogue with one another and engage in shared learning. I am currently an Associate Professor at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems and am a registered general nurse. As well as supervising doctoral students, I am chairperson of the Research Degrees Committee with responsibility for governance of doctoral and other research degree programmes. Prior to taking up employment in UCD in 1994, I held the position of Lecturer in Health Promotion at the University of Edinburgh. I was awarded a National University of Ireland scholarship for achievements in my undergraduate examinations in social science at University College Cork in 1985, and obtained my PhD from Trinity College Dublin in 1996. |
