Research Interests
| Research plans: Ph.D. registration (January 2012), School of History and Archives, UCD. Title: Midwifery and Maternity Care in Ireland, 1890-1970 . Research project: invited by the Centre for the History of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Manchester, to provide the section on historical regulation of midwifery in Ireland (North and South). This is part of a project on midwifery and nursing history, commissioned by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, UK. Project outputs will be published as an e-book in 2012. Independent research project commenced May 2011: An oral history of teachers of midwifery in the Republic of Ireland (c. 1976-1998), and their role in maintaining the identity of midwifery as a distinct profession. Other research interests: hospitals in medieval Ireland, public health in 19th and 20th century Ireland; women and philantrophy ; meditation, spirituality and health; art history, especially medieval manuscript illumination; medieval Butler family Earls of Ormond, especially the family of James, 4th Earl of Ormond, and their involvement in the Wars of the Roses. |
