Enhancement of Teaching
As a registered Nurse Teacher, throughout my career I have endeavoured to develop and utilise a wide range of teaching approaches, both classroom and clinically based, with the aim of enhancing student learning. Two key elements are central to my on-going teaching enhancement, student feedback and critical reflection. Student Feedback - In addition to the formal university feedback mechanisms, I offer all students an opportunity and invite them individually and in small groups, to evaluate and provide anonymous feedback about how their learning matches stated intended learning outcomes. Students are also asked to provide feedback on what works well and what needs to be changed in terms of content, teaching approaches utilised and assessment approaches. Critical Reflection - As a reflective practitioner, I devote time to reflecting on my teaching at both an individual session level and at a module/course level. This process generally requires an examination of my taken for granted assumptions about the subject I am teaching and the skills I consider valuable for students to learn, as well as the approaches I have adopted to facilitate learning and assessment approaches. Student feedback, formal and informal is central to this process as is feedback form colleagues both clinical and academic. Engagement with the published literature on teaching and learning is a further element of this reflective process and enables me to situate my teaching in the wider international context.
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
Fully exploited implementation of modularization and semesterisation within the university to re-focus BSc psychiatric nursing curriculum delivery model to one which is skills focused and competency based. Personally initiated mapping of knowledge and skills required for all theoretical and clinical practice modules at each programme level to ensure progressive continuity of competency development towards registration standards. Initiated and developed integrated clinical skills learning package for final year students to facilitate competency development and consolidate learning. Linked to this, personally designed and implemented innovative modular assessment methodology, centered on a clinical examination approach requiring students to integrate knowledge and skills for clinical practice and demonstrate these in a holistic way.

Innovation & Leadership
Innovation has been demonstrated in module development, assessment methods and in streamlining structures and processes at module and school level. The nature of involvement of service users in the collaborative module is novel and unique in nursing education in Ireland. Leadership has been demonstrated in leading and managing complex and critical processes including school professional accreditation and in developing new systems - an electronic archive of programme and school documentation to maintain an historical record and support future
