Teaching Philosophy
My philosophy of teaching is greatly influenced by the work of Piaget (1972) and the importance of creating a state of imbalance in student's thinking in order to challenge what they already believe to be true, leading to modified thinking or new learning.
Modules Coordinated
201200 NMHS10040 Nursing,Midwifery & Health Sys: Psychology&Interper Skills CP
Enhancement of Teaching
It is my belief that two key attributes of an effective teacher is the ability to communicate well and be responsive to student's needs. Since 2011 I have offered dedicated open office times for first years students completing the module NMHS10040 Psychology and Interpersonal Skills in Clinical practice. As part of a strategy to support students to think about integrating both the physiology and psychological aspects of health and illness in the module Biopsychosocial issues in clinical practice we decided to incorporate individual discussion time with students around their assignments (which are all very clinically focused). Over the past three years this has been very successful intervention evidence by greater student learning. This assignment support is now integrated as part of lecture contact hours. Over and above this time in class we provide open door support sessions to students the week before their assignments are due in.
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
Over the past five years I have attended curriculum review days organised by the Head of Teaching and Learning and have taken part in group actives, discussion sessions and given feedback on numerous occasions to School documents. In February 2011 I attended a Curriculum Review Workshop for the NMHS facilitated by Dr Geraldine O'Neill, In recent times I have contributed when requested to the ongoing National Review of Undergraduate Programmes. In 2008 Chaired a Psychology Subject Team. The role of which was to foster collaboration, consistency and coherence in the teaching of psychology across the range of programmes offered at the School. The team consisted of all module co-ordinators across the School who taught psychology or use psychological theory within their modules. The recommendations will be used to inform the new curriculum in the School
