Biography:
Dr Declan Patton RPN, RNT, BNS(Hons), MSc, PGDipEd, PGCRM, PhD I am currently Associate Dean for Teaching & Learning in the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. In this position I work with others in helping develop Teaching & Learning initiatives in the School. In this position I also help lead the development of new pathways of study for International students from across the world. I am a member of the School Management Team, and work closely with many others in the University in maintaining and furthering the Teaching & Learning experience for staff and students. Prior to this I was Vice Principal for Teaching & Learning in the College of Life Sciences from 2009-2011. In this role I worked with staff in the Colleges' seven constituent Schools to improve Teaching & Learning across the College. I have been a lecturer in the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems since August 2002. Prior to this I worked as a nurse in a number of Dublin hospitals specialising in acute and intensive care psychiatric nursing, older person nursing and nurse education. During this time I completed a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Nursing from Trinity College, Dublin. I was a member of the first cohort of degree students to graduate from Trinity College in 1998, doing so with a first class honours. In 2001 I graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Ulster, Jordanstown. In 2008, I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Research Methods through the Faculty of Arts, Media & Design at Staffordshire University, United Kingdom, completing my PhD in 2009. Since entering UCD I have coordinated the BSc Nursing (Psychiatric), being appointed subject head from 2008-2011. In 2005 I was appointed as Project Manager to the integration of Childrens Nursing and Midwifery undergraduate education into UCD. This was a process that took approximately two years and involved the management of a substantial capital budget and engaging with stakeholders at hospital, university and government level. I have worked as an external examiner for under and post graduate Diploma and Degree courses at Hull University from 2004 until 2008. Presently, I am external examiner to nursing courses at the University of Western England. I am also an internal coach to UCD staff having completed an intensive training programme.

Research Interests
| I have been a research team member to the Review of the 5 points of entry to the An Bord Altranais register, a study that was funded by An Bord Altranais and which ran during 2004/2005. I have evaluated the implementation of clinical supervision in an acute psychiatric admission unit in a Dublin hospital in 2004. This was done in collaberation with clinical partners. I have collected data for the National Nursing Leadership Study in 2009 and the Identification of Nursing & Midwifery Priorities for Ireland study in 2005. I have been a research team member to the National Clinical Leadership Development Project Pilot in 2011. I have also published in peer reviewed journals in the areas of acute mental health nursing and Reality Orientation in older person care. |
