Biography:
I am currently Head of School and Dean at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. I was appointed a Fellow in Teaching & Academic Development in May 2009 for a 2-year period. I am involved in funded research programmes and projects in the areas of protection of older persons, clinical leadership in nursing and midwifery and the history of nursing and midwifery in Ireland. I graduated from the Open University in 1997 with a BSc (Hons) degree and from UCD in 2000 with an MSc (Nursing) (Education). I subsequently undertook MEd and MA (SocSci) degrees with The Open University, graduating in 2002 and 2003, respectively. I also undertook my doctoral work at The Open University Research School and completed my Doctor of Education degree in September 2007. My doctoral thesis was a sociological investigation into the underlying principles structuring academic nursing in Ireland (see here: http://www.legitimationcodetheory.com/pdf/2010McNamara.pdf) |
Research Interests
| My main research interest is on the nature of nursing as an academic and professional discipline and on the academic identities of nurses working in higher education. This focus generates important questions about the content and level of undergraduate and graduate programmes and on the proper focus of nursing research. I am interested in questions concerning the attainment of a critical mass of research capacity in academic nursing and on the reproduction of the discipline and succession planning. I am Associate Investigator on the IRCHSS-funded Irish Centre for Nursing and Midwifery History based at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. I am Project Manager for the HSE-funded study into the Clinical Leadership Needs of Nurses and Midwives in Ireland. I am a member of the research team at the Centre for the Protection of Older People based at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. |
