Taught Graduate Programmes

At the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems, we aim to provide graduate programmes to prepare nurses to excel as care-givers and as leaders. The UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems has the largest graduate nursing and midwifery student population of any higher education institution in Ireland. Our School has a reputation for academic excellence, quality teaching and innovative research, ensuring that students gain valuable knowledge and specialist skills which are current, relevant, marketable and responsive to community health care needs now and in the future. Our graduates have gone on to assume key positions in the professions, both nationally and internationally.

All our programmes offer flexibility in routes of admission in order to meet the needs of all students, from those who have been nurses for several years to those who are just beginning to consider a graduate career in nursing. The modular structure of our programmes affords great flexibility and allows students to undertake certain programmes at their own pace. In addition to our well established methods of teaching and learning, we offer a range of innovative and interactive pedagogical approaches through blended learning techniques such as on line discussion boards, moodle boards and Wikis. These teaching and learning activities enable students to manage and balance their work demands with the academic and clinical requirements of our programmes.

All our Taught Graduate Programmes provide nurses and midwives with the knowledge and skills to articulate and investigate the nursing and midwifery contribution to health and social care. While focusing on distinctive nursing theory and research, our students know that nursing leadership demands both the ability to make sound clinical decisions and the wisdom to step back and analyze the health care environment in which they work. They are committed to shaping the future of their profession. Cognisant of recent developments in health care and the need to identify the distinct disciplinary and interdisciplinary contribution to health and well being, our programmes are built on a sound interdisciplinary base, enabling professional nurses,  midwives and allied professions  to participate as full members of the healthcare team.

Our teaching staff have strong links with area health services, major hospitals and community-based health services. Many clinicians also contribute regularly to our teaching. We invite you to consult the programme descriptions on the following pages for more details and to contact the relevant members of the academic and administration staff who will be pleased to provide you with further information or to answer your queries.
