Who is the Professional Certificate in Pain Management for?
This professional certificate is designed for nurses who are interested in becoming knowledgeable in the study of pain, the prevention and pain and understand the complex nature of pain.
What is the programme about?
The programme helps you to develop knowledge and assessment skills for managing patients with pain. The American Society Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) has awarded international affiliate to this programme. The Irish Pain Society (Chapter IASP) has provided a scholarship for the student with the highest academic achievement.
Programme objective
We aim to expand your knowledge and skills in pain management education in the context of clinical assessment methods with children, adults and older person with pain
What will I learn?
You will learn advanced knowledge on pain prevention and management and apply these skills to clinical settings. Your clinical placements will be facilitated by an expert nurse in pain.

This stand-alone module is delivered in association with the Department of Pain Medicine, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and is focused on developing advanced theoretical and clinical skills in the area of pain. The programme is expanding to include children's nurses, in collaboration with the three children's hospitals.

The students body are drawn from a wide variety of clinical specialisms and organisations, enabling the sharing of learning and experience between you and your class members, as well as from the academic staff.
Curriculum
The programme is delivered over one semester (September – December) and the module is entitled Pain Management (15 ECTS).
Careers/where can I go?
This UCD accredited professional certificate will provide recipients with professional currency and credibility in the clinical setting. Students will be offered a rewarding educational experience which you can apply directly in clinical practice.
Applicants must:
- Be registered as professional nurses or midwives on a live register.
- Have a minimum of one year post-registration experience.
- Must have patient/client access for the duration of the programme.
Documents to be submitted with your application:
- Certificates of nursing qualifications or validated copies of awards
- Original transcript(s) including date and grading of degree award (non UCD Graduates only) & notarised English translations where relevant
- A current photocopy of An Bord Altranais registration
- Copy of Birth Certificate or Personal Page of Passport
- Sealed envelope with the Professional Reference Form (original form)
- Evidence of proficiency in English language (applicants whose first language is not English)
