Innovation Dublin 2011, runs from 17 October until 18 November, and the overarching theme of this year’s festival is Innovation by Design. The objective of this year’s festival is to harness creativity, to make change happen and to drive innovation.

NovaUCD ‘Entrepreneurs Live!’ seminars
Three NovaUCD ‘Entrepreneurs Live!’ seminars, organised by NovaUCD in association with the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board, will take place as part of the Innovation Dublin 2011 festival.
The theme of the three seminars is setting-up and running a company in challenging times and the aim of the seminars is to encourage would be entrepreneurs to ‘just start’ their businesses.
Each of the speakers will shares their experiences in setting-up and running successful enterprises especially in challenging economic times.

FuturICT Showcase
The FuturICT flagship proposal intends to unify hundreds of the best scientists in Europe, with the support of all the Irish universities, in a ten-year €1 billion programme to explore social life on earth and everything it relates to.
The FuturICT flagship proposal will produce historic breakthroughs and provide powerful new ways to manage challenges that make the modern world so difficult to predict, including the financial crisis.
The event aims to make the general public aware of the Irish involvement in this cutting-edge research.

Snapshot of Industrial Research in UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering
As part of Innovation Dublin 2011 the UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering is holding an Open Morning in the UCD Engineering and Materials Science Centre.
The main aim of the event is to give industry and company representatives an opportunity to visit UCD and to hear from 5 leading academics who will talk about their ongoing research activities and applications in industry.
This UCD School has four key research themes, Energy, Materials, Design & Manufacturing and Bioengineering.
The overall objective of the event is to improve industry involvement with the research that is taking place in this UCD School to ensure that it matches industry needs. The event will also give attendees an opportunity to discuss other topics such as availability of students for industry placements, industry access to School equipment etc.
Also speaking at the event is Dr Martin Gilmore, Lancaster University who will discuss a EU-funded (KARIM) project involving eight partners, including UCD, from six countries who are working together to improve industry access to high-value innovation support and technology.

Professor Michael Shanks, visiting Professor in digital humanities at UCD’s Humanities Institute, will deliver two workshops entitled Collaborative Innovation Networks: How to be Interdisciplinary and What it is to be Human: Archaeological Perspectives on Human Creativity.
Professor Shanks is Director of Stanford University's Humanities Lab and CARS (Center for Automotive Research at Stanford). He also the Omar and Althea Hoskins Professor of Classical Archaeology at Stanford.

CSET Thesis in Three
As part of Innovation Dublin 2011, The CLARITY Centre for Web Sensor Technologies, The Centre for Research on Adaptive Nano Structures and Nano Devices (CRANN) and Systems Biology Ireland (SBI) are co-ordinating a CSET Thesis-in-Three event.
This event will feature over 20 students from Science Foundation Ireland-funded Centres for Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) presenting their doctoral research in a series of concise, rapidly paced talks, in plain English, consisting of 3 slides of precisely 1 minute each.
Each presentation is essentially a PhD elevator pitch with the aim of opening up current world-class Irish research to a wider general public audience.

UCD Imagine Science Film Festival
Science and art are happy bedfellows of design and innovation. The UCD Imagine Science Film Festival is a platform for Irish innovators across the spectrum of science and creativity. As part of Innovation Dublin 2011, the launch of the UCD Imagine Science Film Festival initiative, will take place with a sneak preview of the kind of screenings and events that will take place 2012.
The UCD Imagine Science Film Festival 2012 is an exhilarating exploration of science through film and digital media programmed in collaboration with Imagine Science Film Festival New York. Working with Irish partners from the science, media, film and cultural sectors, UCD Imagine Science Film Festival will stimulate the public appetite for science though film, video & digital media, debate, discussion, and art that tell the story of science, how science impacts on our lives and how scientists think and work.
The festival’s core programme runs from 11-15 July 2012 as part of Dublin City of Science, with additional events across the country throughout the year.
