Monday to Friday: 08.30 - 18.00 .
Out of Hours Service:
An out of hours service is available for emergency testing.
Before out of hours (testing) can proceed it must be approved by a Consultant Microbiologist/ Pathologist at the requesting hospital.
The on-call service can be accessed outside normal hours by contacting and leaving a concise message (Contact Name / Hospital / Tel No / Ext.) at Airpage Relays Tel No.: 01 - 2830 800, Bleep No.: 140898.
Emergency tests available on-call are as follows:

- Organ donors: HBsAg, antibodies to HIV, HTLV, HCV, Hepatitis B core, Toxoplasma, CMV and Syphilis.
|
- Immuno-compromised patients: DEAFF test/CMV pp65 antigen detection. Out of hours testing for the DEAFF test/ CMV pp65 is only available on Fridays. Please contact the laboratory before 5 p.m. Specimens must reach the NVRL before 6 p.m.
|
- Needlestick injury investigation: HBsAg and anti-HIV on needlestick source. Anti-HBs for recipients when the source is confirmed HBsAg positive or of unknown HBV status. (HCV investigations are performed the next working day). Needles are not tested out of hours.
|
- Dialysis patients: HBsAg, anti-HCV and anti- HIV as requested.
|
- Determination of immune status in pregnant women/Immuno-compromised patients who have been exposed to Varicella Zoster virus.
|
- Additional investigations will only be performed following discussions with clinical staff
at the NVRL.
The results will be telephoned to the requesting doctor. To ensure immediate transmission of results, the request form accompanying the specimen must indicate the requesting doctor's name and bleep no./ phone no.
