Introduction


The aim of this programme is to provide a broad perspective on environmental assessment and management to professionals that are required to interact with environmental scientists, evaluate specialist environmental inputs to their work and assist in the development of best practice environmental management / mitigation /technologies / design. This programme is a part-time multidisciplinary graduate programme, which is designed for professionals with an interest in environmental management, including planners, architects, engineers, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) specialists and legal professionals.

 

Mapping your Certificate:

  • The programme is mapped at level 9 on the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI) framework.
  • On successful completion of the programme, graduates will be able to progress to a variety of taught and research graduate degrees.

  • Environmental Legislation and Regulation
  • Introduction to Environmental Science
  • Environmental Assessment and Management

How will I study?

Learning takes place through an engaging blend of asynchronous online lectures, attendance at UCD for workshops, and online interaction activities. The online lectures are made available weekly and are supported by pre-lecture and post-lecture learning activities. Students can submit questions online following each lecture and take part in online discussion.

 

Commitment required from students:

  • This part-time programme is designed to be completed over one full academic year.
  • The Professional Certificate is normally completed over two semesters.
  • Half day workshops will normally be held on Fridays between 9 am and 1 pm. There will be two workshops per module.
  • Assessment strategies include continuous assessment, assignments, projects and examinations.
  • UCD expects that students who register to its programmes are in a position to commit to attending and being available on scheduled programme and assessment dates. 

Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete the Professional Certificate in Environmental Management will be able to advise management on a range of environmental legal and regulatory issues in their workplace, have perspective on global and national environmental concerns, have a good understanding of the scientific principles underlying environmental assessment and management and professionally interact with a range of environmental specialists to assess and mitigate potential impacts to the environment.

Entry Requirements

  • Applicants to the programme should hold a level 8 qualification (Higher Diploma or Honours Degree with an award of 2.2 or above) from a recognised third level institution.
  • Applicants must supply transcripts of their primary degree or higher diploma and all supporting documentation at the time of application.
  • Applicants must supply an up to date 2 page CV.
  • It is essential that students have the use of a personal computer with good internet access in order to participate in the programme. Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • In exceptional circumstances, where an individual has substantial and significant experiential learning, a portfolio of written evidence demonstrating these qualities may be considered as an alternative route. Evidence used to demonstrate these qualities may not be used for exemption against modules within the programme.
