ARCT40770 Construction Legislation


This module is for students in Semester 1 or Semester 2 of the Professional Diploma (Architecture). It is also available as a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) module.

What will I study?

This module covers the range of relevant to legislation related to construction and development in Ireland. 

Topics include:

  • Legal Framework
  • EU Issues (relating to Construction Legislation)
  • Planning & Development Legislation (Planning Law, Procedure and Practice)
  • Health & Safety Legislation (Law, Procedure & Practice)
  • Building Control Legislation (Law, Procedure and Practice)
  • Conservation Policy & Legislation, Sustainability
  • Environmental and other legislation relating to construction/ built environment
  • procurement and architectural practice

How will I study?

The Online Professional Diploma (Architecture) will be delivered through the UCD Blackboard system and will consist of:

  • Interactive learning including lecture notes, powerpoint presentations, linked external reading/ video and interactive learning including reinforcement quizzes etc.
  • Screen recordings to demonstrate reference material
  • Online multiple-choice quizzes
  • Interactive discussion boards

Expected Commitment

Students are not required to attend any lectures at the UCD campus as part of the course. However, they are expected to attend for one day at the end of the semester to take the exam of the module.  Students are expected to spend a total 120 hours workload during the semester consisting of:

  • Lectures, videos and other online learning materials (throughout the semester):  24 hours
  • Specific related reading: 12 hours
  • Student Autonomous Learning: 84 hours

How will I be assessed?

2-Hour Written Examination at the end of the Semester: 100%

Having successfully completed this module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a good working knowledge and understanding of all current relevant legislation and regulations relating to Planning & Development, Health & Safety, Building Control, Conservation, Sustainability, Environmental , and other legislation relating to construction/ built environment, procurement and architectural practice.
  • Demonstrate an ability to identify the legislation and regulations relevant to a project and an ability to professionally advise a client in relation to compliance and statutory requirements.
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply all relevant legislation, regulations and "best practice" standards throughout the design and construction of a project.
  • Demonstrate an ability to implement effective quality control and audit procedures in relation to compliance with the legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate an ability to recognise his/her own limitations and an ability to identify other sources of information and expertise where required.
  • Demonstrate an avility to communicate clearly and comprehensively.

Am I eligible?

Students must have a primary qualification in architecture (B.Arch or equivalent approved 5-year qualification) in order to enter the Professional Diploma (Architecture) programme. This module is also available as CPD (Continuing Professional Development) without the requirement for a primary qualification.
