UCD Philosophy was ranked among the top 100 departments of Philosophy worldwide according to the recent QS World Rankings survey (2017).
We are the largest teaching and research centre for Philosophy in Ireland. The School of Philosophy was recognized as one of the top schools in the English Speaking World for graduate studies in Twentieth Century Continental Philosophy by the Philosophical Gourmet.
We are unique in the broad range of research and teaching interests we offer. Our areas of expertise include Contemporary European (Continental) Philosophy, Analytic Philosophy, History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, Political Philosophy and Cognitive Science. Our members of staff have published widely in the history of philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and are prominent in international academic circles. Unlike many other internationally recognised departments, we also offer a friendly and open atmosphere where students and staff regularly interact and exchange ideas in discussion groups and coffee mornings.
A highly ranked periodical, The International Journal of Philosophical Studies, is edited from the School and we also publish a peer-reviewed graduate philosophy journal, Perspectives. The School of Philosophy is also part of Dublin Philosophical Research Network. We have also been successful in attracting national and international research funding, including Irish Research Council postgraduate and postdoctoral fellowships.
Our size and our range of diverse interests provide an exciting learning experience for undergraduates and graduates. Indeed, UCD School of Philosophy is known for its vibrant intellectual atmosphere. We hold numerous international conferences and workshops, figures such as Noam Chomsky, Hilary Putnam, Judith Butler, John McDowell, Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor and Jürgen Habermas have been regular visitors to the School.
Many of our former students hold academic positions in Ireland, UK and USA. Others are prominent playwrights, journalists, human rights activists, broadcasters, film-makers and musicians.
