"Between Ethics and Politics: Kristeva and Butler on Intercorporeality"
Whilst Julia Kristeva’s important work on corporeality, including her assertion of the ethical dimension of corporeal bonds, has enriched much of feminist thought, she falls short of developing a feminist theory of embodiment which connects ethics with politics. To bridge this gap, this paper supplements Kristeva’s ideas with Judith Butler’s recent writings on ethics, in particular her articulation of the body in its exposure to others and its vulnerability to violence. Underlying my discussion is my interest in the prospects for a subversive body politics; specifically, I want to explore how the project of an embodied ethics may foreground transformative bodily acts.
