MA in Contemporary European Philosophy

For students interested in contemporary European philosophy (also known as "continental" philosophy), University College Dublin is reckoned to be one of the top ten universities in the English speaking world (The Philosophical Gourmet report). This programme draws on the expertise of several members of the School in a broad range of philosophical topics.

Programme Structure
Students must take six philosophy modules, of which four must be from the following modules offered for 2009/10. (The remaining two modules may be any of those offered by the School. See the list here)

Semester I:

  • PHIL40250 Merleau-Ponty (Mooney)
  • PHIL40360 Heidegger-from Dasein to Kehre (Cohen)
  • PHIL40400 Kant and his Interpreters (O'Shea)

Semester II:

  • PHIL40330 Critical Theory (O'Connor)
  • PHIL40440 Phil Reflect on Race & Empire (McCarthy)
  • PHIL40450 Phenomenology of the Stranger (Kearney)
  • PHIL40610 Religion & Society (Cooke)
  • PHIL40410 Philosophy & Literature (Cohen)

In addition, they must write a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words. It is expected that students will choose as their dissertation topic something from one of the taught areas. Students are encouraged to discuss possible topics with their lecturers.

The weighting of the course requirements is:

  • Taught course work (2/3)
  • Dissertation (1/3)

The admission requirements are the same as those of the MA in Philosophy (General Programme).
