Teaching Philosophy
I subscribe to Aristotle's belief that man (and woman) by nature seek knowledge. I therefore treat students as partners in learning and assume that they can share my enthusiasm and love for even the most abstract ideas. Occasionally, I am proven wrong, but not very often!

Enhancement of Teaching
I have always been passionate about teaching. The same passion has been the impetus to think deeply and frequently about my methods of teaching and to try to find ways to improve my performance. My development as an effective teacher has been achieved through self-reflection, peer mentoring, using student feedback, as well as in house and international training . Critical thinking, problem solving, use of reason and autonomy or independence of thought are key presuppositions of philosophy as a discipline. I use these foundational disciplinary values to anchor my teaching. To this end, I have adopted teaching technics¿ even in my very large classes ¿ that encourage students to express their views and to engage with the lecturer directly. The goal has been made possible through the use of up to date technological innovations and various social media. I also supplement my lectures with detailed notes in the form of class handouts or material posted on Blackboard. In this way, I have more time in class to engage with students rather than lecture AT them. I am also always experimenting with various strategies to increase student engagement with my courses. The steps I have taken include, assigning a percentage of the final mark to tutorial attendance, encouraging dialogue and discussion on the Facebook page of my undergraduate modules, making use of a variety of teaching techniques that encourages class presence, e.g. showing short videos in the class, encouraging class discussions and participation, requiring blog type reflections on the course, etc.
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
From the outset of my career, it has been my practice to solicit and use student feedback to enhance my teaching. Specifically, I have used feedback by students in order to retain and develop aspects of my teaching that were effective from the student's point of view and to change what was not as effective. In the course of my duties as a philosophy subject specialist in UK, I observed, wrote formal reports, and gave informal feedback, on lectures given by 12 philosophers, from a variety of intellectual backgrounds, in four different British Universities. This process of direct observation and evaluation provided me with insights into teaching that were far superior to any I had obtained in the course of attending formal training sessions in the past. In the light of these experiences, I have initiated a number of improvements in my teaching practices, e.g., use of online material and reliance on handouts as supplementary teaching material in the course of my lectures. I have also become even more sensitive to student¿s low threshold of concentration.
Developing as a Teacher
I think one of my main assets as a teacher is the enthusiasm I have for engaging with students from all levels. All surveys of my students have pointed to this feature of my teaching style as one of the core reasons for the popularity of my classes. Over thirty years of teaching, starting in Trinity College Dublin and continuing at UCD, I have made every effort to keep alive my own interest in the material I teach and not to become ¿jaded¿. To this end, I have refreshed my teaching material and approach on very regular basis. Crucially, I have attempted to keep my teaching informed with both the latest developments in teaching technology as well as with the ongoing debates within my field. Based on feedback from students, I have attempted to organise my teaching material on Blackboard better and to make the structure of my courses and the connections between the lecture, the tutorials and the background reading material clearer. I have also experimented with different methods of assessment and attempted to connect the learning outcomes of my courses more clearly with the assessment methods.
Innovation & Leadership
I devise new courses and employ new methods of delivery on regular basis. i explore new methods of assessment and try to learn from my international peers in this and other respects.
