Justin Carville lectures in Historical & Theoretical Studies in Photography and Visual Culture at the Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dun Laoghaire.  He is a former Government of Ireland Senior Research Scholar in the Humanities and Social Sciences, 2003-2004, and his published research on Irish photography has appeared in the journals  Afterimage , Early Popular Visual Culture, Source, Circa, Next Level and the Irish Journal of Anthropology as well as a number of edited books and exhibition catalogues.  He recently guest edited a special Ireland-themed issue of the journal Early Popular Visual Culture and a special issue of the journal Photographies on globalization and the photographic image.  He has just completed a long term research project entitled "The City in Ruins: Photography, Modernity and the Imaginative Geographies of Dublin" and is currently researching the connections between photography, ethnography and the visualization of Irish identity in the work of Alfred Court Haddon, J.M. Synge, R. J. Welch and Dorothea Lange as well as others, for which he has received an IRCHSS Research Fellowship for 2008-2009.
