Growing Up in Ireland research conference, Croke Park
The last annual research conference took place on Thursday November 3rd. On behalf of the NNSC, Maartje Schreurs presented results of the diet of five-year-old children in the Growing Up in Ireland study. Preliminary results showed that children are not meeting the recommendations for iron, calcium and vitamin D, which is in line with previous studies representative for Ireland. Comparing their food intake with the food pyramid guidelines showed that children are overconsuming the foods high in sugar, salt and fat, and meat and other protein rich products, while consuming too little fruit and vegetables, and bread and other carbohydrate-sources.
