Graduate Taught and Research Programmes in the UCD School of Physics

The UCD School of Physics has undergone a rapid expansion in graduate activity in the last three years. There are now 13 taught masters and graduate certificate students in the area of NanoBio Science and over 60 PhD students in the school. Since September 2006 PhD students have registered to a Structured PhD Programme featuring, among other things, enhanced supervision via a doctoral sudies panel and access to taught modules in transferrable skills and often discipline specific skills as well. Research is conducted in both Theoretical and Experimental Physics on scales from particle physics to cosmology and astrophysics, including nanoscale, atomic , molecular, biological and optical physics. The researchers in the school enjoy an international reputation in their field, as witnessed by the fact that the impact of our research over the five years to 2011 is over 3-times the global average for Physics, and that the mean h-index for the school's academic staff is 17. Indeed 13 of the school's 21 academics have an h-index of 13 or higher, so the school's h2:N index is 13:21.

Most PhD students can expect to publish up to five times in international peer-reviewed journals during the course of their PhD studies, which typically lasts for four years and is funded by a grant held by the principal investigator.

  • Structured PhD Programme in Simulation Science started in 2011 (positions are filled for this year). For further information visit the homepage of the programme.
  • NEW: Physics by Negotiated Learning (PNL) MSc starts again in September 2012  and is currently inviting applications!
As the name suggests, the PNL Taught Masters programme has more flexibility than our other degree offerings, being primarily aimed at:
    • individuals with specific workplace & continuing professional development needs, and/or
    • groups of students wishing to specialize in a specific research area of Physics that is of interest to a particular industry or academic sector.
The duration of the PNL MSc programme is 1 year for full time (FT) students and 2 years for part time (PT) students. Modules qualifying for the coursework credits are offered by a variety of postgraduate programmes at UCD. A partial list of graduate courses/modules being currently offered in Physics @ UCD is available online. Additional suggestions for modules that may count towards coursework credit, after being added to each student's PNL negotiated learning contract, are also listed on the webpages of at DRHEA, CASL-SimSci, CASL-Bioinfo, and CSI.
For further information and to determine eligibility, please email a copy of your transcripts and a brief statement of training and research interests to Dr. Vio Buchete: buchete@ucd.ie .
