Conferences

School video conference

In 2003 we organised a virtual visit of 200 students from various Irish schools, North and South of the border, to CERN, via a multi-way video conference. They heard brief presentations from the beam control room, and then posed questions directly to the scientists there. A report of the student invasion made it to the front page of the CERN bulletin! or if you prefer you can read it in French! or in the 'Irish universities promoting science' bulletin

TV

CERN and related physics has featured a number of times on a science production of Stopwatch TV for RTE.
  • Ronan McNulty gave a compressed explanation of Einstein's theory of relativity in show 8 of series 3.
  • we showed Scope around CERN where they talked to John Ellis and Steve Myers (video to follow)
  • and they also interviewed Paul Bowe (a former UCD graduate) after he made anti-hydrogen for the first time.

School contact

  • Plenary lecture at the European Young Scientist competition in 2004
  • Lecture to Secondary School Teachers at the Physics Teacher's Annual Conference in Galway 2003.
  • Career guidance and physics talks to Secondary School pupils.
