2018 Graduate Summer Internships

UCD Space Science and Technology masters students presented their summer research project work at a poster session on 31st August 2018. We were delighted to see all the good work that the students have been involved in over the summer. We were thrilled that 5 of 7 students on industry internships were offered full-time employment. One student continues her six-month placement in the European Space Agency. 9 more students presented academic research projects, of which 2 were offered PhD positions. We wish them all every success in their future careers, and we look forward to meeting the new MSc class in September!

2018 Undergraduate Summer Internships

UCD School of Physics offered a number of undergraduate summer internships. These ran for 8 weeks, from 4th June 2018 until 27th July, and saw students work closely with a member of academic staff on a specified project. Participants gained experience of research in an academic environment, on topics including astrophysics, lasers and plasmas, and theoretical physics. Interns received a stipend of €800 for the 8 weeks.

The list of summer internship projects which were offered is available in pdf format.

Summer Interns (Left to Right): Jeremy Rigney, Christopher Hughes, Kane Collins, Kevin Mongey, Fiona Gallagher, Sarah Gillespie, Conor O'Donnell, Xian Yao Gwee and Sarah O Halloran.

Internship topics ranged from experimental to theoretical, across numerous research groups. Additionally, some students’ projects were designed to enhance lab-based experiments taken by our undergraduate students throughout the academic year. UCD School of Physics held its annual Summer Internship Poster Competition on 26th July 2018. Each year the School hosts interns from institutions in Ireland and abroad with 12 students completing the programme this year.

Kevin Mongey (1st prize)

Fiona Gallager (2nd prize)

The event was an excellent opportunity for staff, and all those who had assisted with projects over the summer, to see the large amount of work interns invested in their projects. Students were kept very busy answering questions from our three judges: Dr. Andrew Mitchell, UCD Theoretical Physicist; Dr John Regan, Astrophysicist at Dublin City University; and UCD Experimentalist Prof. Gerry O'Sullivan.

The winners plus judges (Left to Right): Dr John Regan, Prof Martin Grünewald, Prof Gerry O'Sullivan, Dr Andrew Mitchell, Kevin Mongey (1st prize), Fiona Gallager (2nd prize) and Dr Morgan Fraser.
