Dr Martin Butler
Vice-President for Students
Dr Butler completed his undergraduate degree in engineering at University College Dublin and his Masters Degree in Statistics and Operations Research at Trinity College Dublin. He gained his PhD in Operations Research from the University of Southampton. His major research interest is management decision making and the use of mathematical models in evaluating decision alternatives. His work has been published in several international journals and he regularly presents at international conferences.
As Director of the UCD Quinn School of Business from 1999 to 2007, he introduced many strategic changes to the undergraduate business programme facilitated by the completion of a new, technologically enhanced building which facilitates student learning. He championed a shift from large group learning to small group teaching and established appropriate learning support and administrative structures at the school. He was also responsible for the establishment of the Centre for Community Engagement which encourages students to engage with local communities and other partners. He was instrumental in the decision by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) to host the 2006 undergraduate conference at UCD Quinn School of Business. Before taking the position of Director at the UCD Quinn School of Business, he was Director of the Bachelor of Commerce Programme at the school.
His primary interest is in higher education and creating a positive student environment. His other interests include environmental issues, travelling, and sports.
