A. The Appointment Process
According to the Universities Act 1997 (and as amended), and in accordance with the provisions of Statute 6 of University College Dublin 2005 (as amended), the appointment of the President takes place in accordance with the following three-tier procedure (in brief):
- A Search Committee appointed by the Governing Authority, having carried out the functions allocated to it (as found in Chapter 4 of the Statute, and including appropriate consultation with staff, students and alumni), ensures that the position is advertised on a national and international basis and its existence disseminated to as broad a target group as possible so as to ensure that applications are received from suitably qualified candidates. It also adopts the criteria to be applied by the Selection Committee in its assessment of the eventual candidates;
- A Selection Committee appointed by the Governing Authority, having carried out the functions allocated to it (also as found in Chapter 4 of the Statute), takes appropriate measures to assess the suitability of the candidates and then determines which candidate, if any, is suitable for appointment to the office of President, and recommends that candidate;
- According to the provisions of Chapter 4 of the Statute, the Governing Authority may appoint the candidate recommended by the Selection Committee, unless it determines that the recommended candidate is not suitable for appointment to the office of President.
Applicants should note that those on the final short list of candidates shall be required to engage with six members of the Governing Authority, at a special meeting of the Selection Committee. - The successful candidate will be required to undergo a medical examination.
B. Duties of the post and remuneration package
Additional particulars of the post include the following.
- The successful candidate will take up office on 1 January 2014. His or her term of office will not exceed ten years and the normal retirement age of 65 will apply.
- The salary will be 200,000 euro per annum and/or as reviewed from time to time by the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector.
- The position of President is fully pensionable in accordance with the terms of the relevant UCD Pension Scheme or other applicable pension provisions.
- The President is obliged to reside in the official residence provided during the President's term of office, subject to the applicable conditions.
- Expenses incurred by the President in the discharge of official business of the office of President (provided they are vouched) will be met by the University.
- Relocation expenses will apply in accordance with the UCD relocation policy.
