UCD School of Psychology

Scoil na Síceolaíochta UCD

Welcome

The current School of Psychology was formed following the restructuring of the University in 2005 and is the result of the amalgamation of the Department of Psychology and the Centre for Disability Studies.  The history of Psychology in UCD began in 1958 when the University established the first taught psychology course in Ireland. Later UCD developed the first accredited undergraduate degree in Psychology, and it pioneered professional training in Clinical Psychology in Ireland, as well as in other areas of professional psychological practice. The Centre for Disability Studies was formally established in 2002. This was also the first centre of its kind in Ireland. Today the School of Psychology is part of the College of Human Sciences and is a leading centre for research, teaching and professional training in the many branches of inquiry that together comprise the discipline of Psychology.

The Psychology Research Laboratory (established in 1958) was refurbished in 2009 and contains a suite of 10 laborarory rooms, staff office accommodation, a Postgraduate Research Room, a large teaching room and a Psychological Test Library located on the 1st Floor of the E block in the Newman Bulding. It is a purpose-built, spacious and well-equippped facility that supports the empirical research requirements of staff and postgraduate and undergraduate students (including laboratory practicals in experimental psychology and final-year research projects) in the School of Psychology. It has a networked computer system (Apple Mac) and contains specialist research equipment for staff and postgraduate research in Eye-Tracking (the Tobii system), EEG and motion analysis, and Neuropsychology. It also has a video-editing suite. The Laboratory has a permanent display of posters highlighting recent research projects by staff and students.  The director of the Laboratory is Professor Aidan Moran, the manager is Dr Mary Ivers and the technical staff are Colin Burke and Andrew Flood.
