UCD Psychology Professor Speaks at Arrival of Olympic Torch in Dublin
On 6 June, the Olympic torch arrived in Dublin – the only city outside Greece and the United Kingdom to host the flame. To mark this unique historical occasion, the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI), the Northern Ireland Branch of the British Psychological Society (NIBPS), and Trinity College, Dublin (as part of its Trinity Psychology 50 Master Class) collaborated to jointly host a Public Lecture by Professor Aidan Moran (School of Psychology, UCD) on Imagination in Action: Mental Practice and Skilled Performance in Sport and Surgery in the Swift Theatre in Trinity College, Dublin.

Professor Todd Edwards and Professor Jo Ellen Patterson from the University of San Diego presented a paper on Family Therapy in Primary Care at a USA-Ireland seminar on Friday March 2nd 2012 in the UCD School of Psychology. The seminar was attended by postgraduates from the UCD doctoral programme in clinical psychology and the University of San Diego masters programme in family therapy.

New textbook in sport psychology

The QS World University Rankings has just released a new series of world rankings which examines medicine, the biological sciences and psychology. The authors note that graduates of these disciplines are among the least likely in the world to be unemployed. The UCD School of Psychology is one of only two universities in Ireland to be placed in the top 100.

The School of Psychology, UCD, inaugurates its Distiguished Scholar annual award with a lecture by Prof. Eleanor Maguire on March 23rd, 2011, at 7.30pm in UCD, Belfield (Theatre C004, Health Sciences Building). Prof Maguire will give a presentation entitled ‘Memories are made of this’ which will explore our ability to recollect the past and to plan future actions. This lecture will draw on the latest advances in neuroimaging technology as well as on recent evidence gathered from patients with brain damage.

Ongoing research on mental practice and expertise in laparoscopic surgery (2008-present)
One of the most remarkable capacities of the mind is its ability to mimic experience using mental imagery. A key application of this cognitive simulation capacity is “mental practice” or the systematic use of mental imagery processes to rehearse skills in the absence of motor movements.

Ongoing research on motor cognition
The research team for this experimental study of visual and motor imagery in mental travel is Prof Aidan Moran (School of Psychology, UCD, Principal Investigator), Prof Stephen Kosslyn and Dr Gregoire Borst (Harvard University), Prof Aymeric Guillot and Prof Christian Collet (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, France) and Dr Tadhg MacIntyre (University of Ulster).

Ongoing research evaluating functional family therapy
Professor Alan Carr is involved in a study that is evaluating functional family therapy within an Irish youth justice context.

On going research on the validation of the Systemic Clinical Outcome and Routine Evaluation (SCORE) for use in an Irish context.
Professor Alan Carr is involved in this research project which is a pragmatic and clinically-based questionnaire for completion by family members 12 years and older, to capture indicators of family functioning that may be sensitive to therapeutic change arising from family therapy.
