Dr Linehan’s first address was part of a Parallel Session on the estimated prevalence and impact of epilepsy in Europe, co-hosted with Professors Jakob Christensen and Poul Jennum (Denmark) and Prof Ettore Beghi (Italy). This symposium introduced the ESBACE project, a European Commission funded project to determine the burden of epilepsy in Europe. The UCD Centre for Disability Studies, in conjunction with Prof Norman Delanty Beaumont Hospital and Royal College of Surgeons, Dr Colin Doherty, St James and Trinity College Dublin and Prof Anthony Staines, Dublin City University, represent Ireland in the pan European study. The Centre is delighted to welcome Drs Ailbhe Benson and Alex Gunko as the research team on this project at UCD.
Dr Linehan’s second paper was part of a Parallel Session on Epilepsy and Intellectual Disability with co-members of the Intellectual Disability Task Force on the Neuropsychiatric Commission of ILAE Professors Mike Kerr (UK), Christian Brandt and Christoph Helmstaedter (Germany) and Vincente Villanueva (Spain). This Task Force has recently published an ILAE Task Force report on behaviour disorder in people with an intellectual disability and epilepsy in Epilepsia Open which can be freely accessed on the Epilepsia Open website.
