Teaching Philosophy
Central to my philosophy is supporting students to develop their awareness and understanding of psychology in the world around them, and to become skilled in evaluating aspects of that world. A common goal is that students become curious about conducting enquiries, and confident in the skills needed to do so.

Enhancement of Teaching
For me, teaching enhancement is an ongoing process and I constantly reflect on my own practice. As a member of the School of Psychology Teaching & Learning Committee I value the opportunity to discuss teaching with colleagues. I review my own modules based on student feedback and peer observation, and draw on peer reviewed publications and conferences to identify new ideas. I am a member and currently co-Chair of the Psychological Society of Ireland's Division of Teachers and Researchers in Psychology, which acts as a national forum for those interested in teaching practice. I believe that enhancement must be driven by evidence and informed by international practice. I am actively involved in research on teaching, which provides an important opportunity to examine the impact and implications of my practice. Two significant experiences have been my Fellowship in Teaching and Academic Development (2011 - 2013) and my contribution to the development of a learning to learn module for 1st Year BA Students (PSY10110 Learning for Success @ University and HUM1003 Introduction to Arts). These experiences have both involved significant multi-disciplinary research on teaching, and the learning from these projects is invaluable. Research methods and design is a significant aspect of my teaching and I regularly link with colleagues teaching in this area in my school and in other psychology schools in Ireland. During my recent sabbatical at the School of Psychology in Massey University (New Zealand) I had the opportunity to examine teaching practices there, which provided an insight into international practice.
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
As Head of Teaching and Learning in the School of Psychology I was involved in yearly module enhancement activities and chaired a major review of the psychology programme in 2010/2011. The review examined the programme in the context of the Psychological Society of Ireland's (PSI) Guidelines for the Accreditation of Undergraduate Programmes. The aim was to ensure that the degree addressed the core areas required by PSI, while also embracing the principles of UCD's Horizon programme such as ensuring student choice. My contribution to the development of a learning to learn module for 1st Year BA Students (PSY10110 Learning for Success @ University and HUM1003 Introduction to Arts) has also given me an insight into curriculum at a programme level. This project has developed a mandatory module delivered in the first semester of 1st year, which aims to support students in the transition to university. Working with colleagues on this module has helped me to develop an understanding of the BA programme, particularly the gaps that a transitional module may help to bridge. I have also been involved in curriculum review at a postgraduate level. In 2009 I took on the role of Director of the MSc in Rehabilitation and Disability Studies. Since then I have reviewed the course each year, drawing on feedback from students, teaching colleagues, our external examiner, staff from the disability sector, and relevant international literature. My aim in reviewing this course has been to ensure that the content is relevant to the demands of working in the sector, while also supporting students' learning and experience of the course. Content changes have sought to increase the coherence within and across modules, focusing on defining introductory modules, core skill-based modules, and finally specialist modules.
Developing as a Teacher
I draw on a range of resources and experiences to support my development as a teacher. For example, the resources provided by UCD Teaching and Learning have been incredibly valuable and I have attended events on assessment and feedback and the design and delivery of graduate teaching assistant modules. Documents on topics such as assessment and large group teaching have also contributed to my development. I have also had the opportunity to take part in events in a national context and I have presented on the development of a learning to learn module to colleagues in IT Tallaght and on my research on teaching research methods and large group teaching at events organised by the Psychological Society or Ireland Division of Teachers and Researchers in Psychology. I have attended specialist conferences including the Annual AISHE Conference (Dublin, 2012) and 4th International Conference on Psychology Education (Sydney, Australia, 2010). My involvement in research on teaching has been another import influence. Collaboration with the other UCD Fellows in Teaching and Academic Development, and with colleagues in UCD Teaching and Learning and my school has provided a opportunity to draw on best practice in my own and other disciplines to inform my own practice.
Innovation & Leadership
In recent years I have had a number of opportunities to develop leadership skills and explore innovative teaching practices. Key experiences include: - Head of Teaching and Learning in the School of Psychology (2008 - 2011, Acting 2012 to date) - Contribution to the development of a learning to learn module for 1st Year BA Students (PSY10110 Learning for Success @ University and HUM1003 Introduction to Arts). - UCD Fellow in Teaching and Academic Development (2011 - 2013).
