Biography

I am a Lecturer in Consumer Behaviour and Technology Adoption at UCD's College of Business. Prior to joining UCD, I received my MSc and PhD degrees in Social and Behavioural Sciences from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. After my PhD, I was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Transport Research, University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom (April 2009 - Dec 2010) and at the faculty of Business and Social Sciences at Aarhus University, Denmark (Jan 2011 - July 2014).

My joint appointment with the School of Business and the Energy Institute is part of UCD's strategy to lay the foundations for a truly interdisciplinary programme in Energy & Environment. I am Principal Investigator in UCD's Energy Institute, as Funded Investigator of the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences, Funded Investigator of the Energy Systems Integration Partnership Programme (ESIPP), Academic collaborator of the Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems Strategic (SEES) Research Cluster and Academic collaborator of the Centre for Business and Society (CeBaS).

Research

Research Interests

My research generally focuses on explaining factors that influence (sustainable) consumer behaviour, particularly related to energy related issues. I study which decision making processes in different types of environmental behaviour and how this is influenced by various factors, such as outcome expectations, trust, norms, values, social and self-identities. Moreover, I study how people can be encouraged to behave more pro-environmental, building on persuasion, communication and social influence theories. Specifically I am interested in understanding adoption of new technologies, such as electric vehicles and smart grid technologies in households; the effectiveness and acceptability of environmental policies; and ways to encourage sustainable behaviour, such as energy conservation. My work has always been part of interdisciplinary and international collaborations. For example, I work with psychologists, marketeers, engineers, economists, geographers and political scientists and I have experience of research collaboration with industry partners.
