Students enrolling in UCD Quinn School of Business programmes receive the most progressive business education in Europe. This exciting learning environment incorporates smaller class sizes, online lectures, a personalised student intranet and virtual experiential learning. In order to avail of and benefit from the school’s innovative facilities, it is essential that all students own a laptop.
In first year students are trained in the use of business tools such as Microsoft Office 2007 Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The training received in these applications ensures students can efficiently complete assignments from lecturers; it also ensures that on leaving the Quinn School they enter the business world with the required level of IT skills essential to succeed in today's job market. To ensure that you do not encounter compatibility problems it is essential that students have the correct software packages installed on their laptops. Equally important, the versions of the various software packages installed must match those used in lectures. The required packages and versions are detailed here.
Yes, there is a one day training course, which is part of your orientation week. The “Technology@Quinn” course occurs in conjunction with the handover of laptops for those who have purchased an EduBook. This course is compulsory for all incoming students.
The purpose of this Technology course is to orientate students on UCD Quinn School’s networks, eLearning applications and support structures. Students will receive important information about laptop care, the school’s virtual learning environment, classroom technology and where to go if they need assistance. There will be various technical staff available during these courses to answer any additional queries. This is a good introduction to UCD Quinn School, and offers a chance to meet with fellow classmates before term commences.
If you have ordered on time, your new EduBook will be delivered to the Quinn School and be available on Friday 9th Sept 2011. If you order past the order deadline, your EduBook will be delivered to the address you nominated.
A substantial amount of coursework will be created and generated from the laptops. Students will have access to online materials using Blackboard, the online course content system, experiential learning and eTeaching applications in the classroom. The laptops can be used in the UCD Quinn School building and across the campus in the many wireless hotspots. EduBook laptops are unrestricted so they can also be used at home or anywhere else.
Yes its imperative that you attend and that you bring your laptop, power supply and network cable.
Apple hardware and software is not completely compatible with UCD Quinn School eLearning and eTeaching environment. You may encounter compatibility issues when it comes to group collaboration, connecting to the audio visual equipment in the classrooms and sharing documents with other students. Compatibility with the network, course work and applications used by lecturers cannot be guaranteed.
UCD Quinn School of Business has been designed with technology and virtual learning in mind. There are over 2000 network ports for wired connectivity as well as substantial wireless access throughout the building in the common areas and the coffee shop.
The Typtec workshop is located in the UCD Quinn School building and will help students who have bought a EduBook laptop with enhanced software and hardware support. BYOL students can visit It Services for advice.
The UCD Quinn School building has wireless access in all many areas - wireless connection allows a student to connect to the Internet, check email and print files and documents without connecting any cables, allowing for increased mobility. Wireless hotspots are available across the entire UCD campus.
