Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) is a form of insurance for a HP laptop. ADP is different to warranty, warranty only allows defective parts to be replaced ADP allows for physically damaged parts to be replaced e.g. If you dropped your laptop. NB Terms and Conditions apply.
Advised Laptop Standard This is the standard a laptop must meet in order for it to work (successfully) within the E-Education environment in the Quinn School.
Anti Spyware This is a program that protects computers from spyware. Spyware is software installed on a computer without the user’s knowledge; spyware gathers information about the user and reports this to 3rd party companies, usually for marketing purposes.
Anti-Virus This is a program that protects a computer from infection by computer viruses. Computer Virus can damage a computer’s software, interfere and take confidential information held on a computer and delete important data.
AMD Turion The brand name for an AMD processor designed for laptop usage.
Bluetooth Bluetooth is an open wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances. Usually it’s used in conjunction with mobile devices.
Chipset Chipset is a number of custom circuits/chips that control a computer.
Display The Screen of a laptop.
EduBook A customized laptop package configured and supplied through a preferred scheme with a customised suite of software and enhanced support only available to students of UCD Business school.
GHz Gigahertz is the speed used to measure a processor. Faster can be considered to be better.
Hard Disk A computer's main storage areas for programs and data. The capacity of a hard disk is measured in gigabytes or GB for short. The speed of a hard drive is measured in RPM, the higher the RPM the more quickly data can be accessed on the disk.
HDMI HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a specification that combines video and audio into a single digital interface for use with DVD players, digital television (DTV) players and other audio-visual devices.
Integrated Camera A camera that is integrated into the design of a laptop, usually located above the LCD.
Intel Core i3 The brand name for an Intel Processor, this is a dual core processor with 4 way multi-tasking.
LCD “Liquid Crystal Display” This is the screen/Display of a laptop.
LED “Light-Emitting Diode” This is the technology used within the screen of a laptop. It allows a typical screen to have a brighter image with better contrast and the screens themselves are thinner than fluorescent back lit screens.
Mac Address The MAC address is a unique value associated with a network card. MAC addresses are also known as hardware addresses or physical addresses.
Memory Also known as RAM, Computer memory is used to hold information while the computer is being worked on. RAM is usually measured in gigabytes (or GB for short) and more is considered better.
MHz Megahertz is the speed used to measure RAM.
Network Card A network card enables your laptop to connect to a network using a cable. The Quinn School has a wired network with high speed internet access. Each network card has a unique MAC Address.
Network Card A network cable is required for use of the in-class network. The cable required is a cat5 UTP of at least 1.5 meters.
Operating System (OS) Every computer has an operating system. This is a master program that runs automatically when you switch the computer on and continues running until you shut down.
Processor The nerve centre of the computer: everything flows through the processor which is also known as the CPU.
SATA II A high speed model of hard drive.
SD RAM Also known as Computer memory, it is used to hold information while the computer it is being worked on. RAM is usually measured in gigabytes (or GB for short) and more is considered better.
Software Application A program used to carry out a particular task, such as word processing, spread sheets, web design or desktop publishing.
Software Image / Software Build Customised software suite which is pre-installed on all Edu Books. This ensures that all of the required educational software applications are pre-configured for use in the Quinn School. The printing facilities and access to the UCD network are also preconfigured for ease of use. Using a software image for student laptops allows Typetec to manage any re-installations or virus issues quickly and efficiently. To re-install all software will only take 30 minutes under normal circumstances.
Technology @ Quinn A half day course for all incoming Quinn students to orient them on UCD Quinn School’s networks, eLearning applications & support structures.
Typetec 3rd party company who are responsible for the sale and support of the EDU BOOK within term time.

UCD Ready

EduBooks come pre-registered on the UCD LAN and the Wireless network will be configured. Ucd Business School Printers will be installed and all E-Learning tools will be pre tested to ensure compatability. 

Warranty A guarantee given to the student by a laptop manufacturer that they will without charge, repair or replace defective parts within a given time limit and under certain conditions.
Wireless Card A wireless card enables your laptop to connect to a network without a cable, thereby increasing mobility.
