Guide to Bringing Your Own Laptop

If you already own a laptop, or intend to purchase outside of the EduBook Package you should be aware that you will be using your laptop for both an academic learning tool and a study aid. Starting in week 1 you will be expected to take part in Instructor-led tutorials, online assessments and group collaboration.

To participate in these activities you should ensure that your laptop meets with the criteria listed below on the Advised Laptop Standard.

Your Responsibilities:

  • You are responsible for all installed software on your laptop, making sure its up to date and fully licensed .
  • As your laptop will be used in both class and for study /group collaboration students you are expected to have every day access to a working laptop.
  • In the event of a hardware or software problem, you are responsible for repairing your laptop in an efficient and timely manner. Advice is available from IT-Services but ultimately this is your responsibility.
  • When you attend your “Technology @ Quinn “ session on Friday 9th of September please ensure you bring your laptop, power supply and a network cable and you have met with all the criteria listed in the Advised Laptop Standard. This will enable you to be added to the UCD network and ensure your laptop is ready for week 1 in the Quinn School.

Important Notes:

  • Windows 7 Professional has been chosen by Quinn as the standard operating system; Chosen because of its reliability and compatibility within the UCD Quinn School E-Learning Environment and the UCD Network. Only limited support will be available for other Windows Operating systems. Other Operating systems such as Apple MAC OS X will receive very limited support.
  • Microsoft Office 2010: there are several versions of MS Office, the version/edition you are required can be either MS Office Professional Plus 2010 or Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010. Unlike other variations of MS Office 2010, these editions have specific applications which are required for academic use within UCD Quinn School eLearning Environment.
  • Antivirus software is a mandatory requirement for all laptops connecting to the Quinn School network. Sophos™ Anti-virus solution is available to UCD students via a campus license. Students should note that Sophos™ Antivirus solution is owned by UCD IT Services and as a result will need to be removed upon completion of your programme of study.

Other Laptop Considerations:

The list below is additional considerations when purchasing/upgrading your laptop.
