Internship Placements

The eight week Programme consists of a six-week internship placement at a leading Irish company. From business to the arts, the internship team can provide a broad spectrum of intellectually engaging internships based on any field of interest, internship goals, and skills. The following is a selection of some of the industries available:

Programme Structure

Telephone placement meeting to discuss priorities and Internship preferences. Students are given the option of taking either a Business Analytics, Irish History, International Business or Service Learning track.

BUSINESS ANALYTICS TRACK - 8 WEEK PROGRAMME

Week 1-2 Orientation & Business Analytics module at UCD campus
Week 2-7 Professional Internship placement in Dublin, Monday-Thursday, approx. 32 hours/week
Week 8 Complete Internship and presentation of research paper at UCD

IRISH HISTORY TRACK - 8 WEEK PROGRAMME

Week 1 Orientation & Irish History module at UCD campus.
Week 2-7 Professional internship placement in Dublin, Monday-Thursday, approx. 32 hours/week
Week 8 Complete Internship and presentation of research paper at UCD campus.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TRACK - 8 WEEK PROGRAMME

Week 1-2 Orientation & International Business module at UCD campus
Week 2-7 Professional Internship placement in Dublin, Monday-Thursday, approx. 32 hours/week
Week 8 Complete Internship and presentation of research paper at UCD campus

Assessment

Students are rigoursly assessed in both of their academic modules. Students will also be given some pre-arrival readings. Team work is also essential in the assessment criteria as is a strategic understanding of the company where the student is placed.

Credit Transfer

We would recommend that 3 US credits are awarded for the Internship module and for the Business Analytics, Irish History, International Business or Service Learning module. The students home institution decides on credits to be awarded. We will be pleased to provide full information to enable institutions to make decisions regarding the transfer of credits. UCD will send an official transcript to the home institution at the end of the Programme.

Cultural – Social Programme

An essential element of the UCD Summer Internship is for students to experience Irish society and culture through an extensive series of excursions and field trips in Dublin and across the island of Ireland.

Typical activities may include:

A weekend trip
Wicklow mountain walk
Hurling match
Castle Tour
Irish Dancing
Traditional Irish Music
Trip to the Races

Health Insurance

Students should make their own arrangements for health insurance, prior to travelling. There is a student health centre on-campus: www.ucd.ie/stuhealth

Visa Information

Please note that if you are a student from outside the European Union (EU) you may be required to apply for a study visa to travel to and study in the Republic of Ireland. In order to find out if you require a student visa to study in the Republic of Ireland please look at the following website Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS)where you will find all pertinent information on Ireland Visa Requirements and a comprehensive list of countries whose citizens do not require a visa to enter and study in Ireland. Only students who intend to enroll on full-time academic programmes can apply for a student visa. Please see the following Department of Justice web site for more information http://www.justice.gov.uk/

Accommodation

Students are given the option to either live on campus in the UCD residences or Off Campus in private apartments/houses in and close to the city centre. There are limited places available in the on campus accommodation. Once you have been accepted on to the programme please email your UCD study abroad coordinator, Madeline, to state whether you would like to live on campus or off campus. The UCD study abroad office will organise all off campus accommodation for students. Please note however that in both instances the UCD Study Abroad office is solely acting as a facilitator and the lease and its associated agreements are between the landlord and tenant.

Eligibility

The minimum GPA requirement is 3.0. In addition to completing the UCD on-line application process, a standard form of identification i.e. copy of Passport, a transcript of academic record to date and letter of recommendation from an academic referee should be uploaded to the students online application before the application deadline.
