Summer Internship Programme

The eight week Programme consists of a six-week internship placement at a leading Irish company. From business to the arts, the internship team can provide a broad spectrum of intellectually engaging internships based on any field of interest, internship goals, and skills. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TRACK - 8 WEEK PROGRAMME

Students are rigoursly assessed in both of their academic modules. Students will also be given some pre-arrival readings. Team work is also essential in the assessment criteria as is a strategic understanding of the company where the student is placed.

We would recommend that 3 US credits are awarded for the Internship module and for the Business Analytics, Irish History, International Business or Service Learning module. The students home institution decides on credits to be awarded. We will be pleased to provide full information to enable institutions to make decisions regarding the transfer of credits. UCD will send an official transcript to the home institution at the end of the Programme.

An essential element of the UCD Summer Internship is for students to experience Irish society and culture through an extensive series of excursions and field trips in Dublin and across the island of Ireland.

Students should make their own arrangements for health insurance, prior to travelling. There is a student health centre on-campus: www.ucd.ie/stuhealth

Please note that if you are a student from outside the European Union (EU) you may be required to apply for a study visa to travel to and study in the Republic of Ireland. In order to find out if you require a student visa to study in the Republic of Ireland please look at the following website Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS)where you will find all pertinent information on Ireland Visa Requirements and a comprehensive list of countries whose citizens do not require a visa to enter and study in Ireland. Only students who intend to enroll on full-time academic programmes can apply for a student visa. Students are given the option to either live on campus in the UCD residences or Off Campus in private apartments/houses in and close to the city centre. There are limited places available in the on campus accommodation. Once you have been accepted on to the programme please email your UCD study abroad coordinator, Madeline, to state whether you would like to live on campus or off campus. The UCD study abroad office will organise all off campus accommodation for students. Please note however that in both instances the UCD Study Abroad office is solely acting as a facilitator and the lease and its associated agreements are between the landlord and tenant.

The minimum GPA requirement is 3.0. In addition to completing the UCD on-line application process, a standard form of identification i.e. copy of Passport, a transcript of academic record to date and letter of recommendation from an academic referee should be uploaded to the students online application before the application deadline.

It is a good idea to read rte.ie or irishtimes.ie to check what is going on weather wise in Ireland and also so you can see what is happening politically, socially and culturally. It is important to know if there are big events such as sporting occasions, marathons etc happening on your arrival as this will impact on your first few days in Dublin. The weather is always very variable here so it is a good idea to pack some light and heavy clothing as well as some rain gear. Try to pack some business casual clothes for your work placement too. Also remember that there are lots of clothing stores here where you can buy some relatively cheap work wear for your six week placement. Check out dunnes.ie or primark.ie. You will need an adapter to use laptops and charge phones. It is also a good idea to make photocopies of your passport, air tickets and to print out two copies of your offer letter and acceptance letter on to the programme.

Please present your offer and acceptance letter to the Immigration officer. Please ensure that they are aware that the programme is for an eight week duration ONLY. You will receive a stamp on arrival in Ireland which will indicate what duration you can stay in the country. Should the stamp be for 30 days you will need to register with GNIB during one of your free Friday's. Please look at the aircoach website www.aircoach.ie and www.hittheroad.ie for helpful hints on how to get to your accommodation from the airport. Also take a look at google maps to assist with your orientation. Remember if you are getting a taxi in to town it is not normal to tip a lot as you are charged a standard fee on entering the taxi plus extras per person. It is important to also check the hittheroad.ie and dublinbus.ie for links from your accommodation to UCD for your classes.

Ireland uses the Euro as currency. It is important to contact your home bank prior to arrival to ensure you are fully aware of banking fees and charges while abroad. It is also a good idea to look in to charges for western union and for travellers cheques.

It is a UCD requirement that you hold health insurance while on the programme. It is also a good idea to have travel insurance in case of thefts or loss of property.

You should contact your landlord with your arrival date and time as soon as possible. Arrange to get the key for your accommodation on arrival. Ensure that you understand about how to operate the heating, hot water and that you are given full instructions regarding the security of the building. Also ensure that you receive a full set of keys.

You should complete your registration and upload your photograph following the email issued to you in Mid May. It is important that you do this prior to arrival so that you have access to the UCD Library and to your Blackboard module environment.

You are registered to two classes. You selected your specialist class on application; Irish history, Doing Business in Ireland or the Business and Analytics class. As you know you are in class from June 10th to June 15th inclusive. You also have class on Friday June 28th and Friday July 12th. Your presentation dates and final submissions take place from Monday, July 29th to Friday August 2nd. Attendance at your classes is compulsory. Your lecturers will email you next week to introduce themselves and their topic. You will receive pre-readings from your lecturers three weeks prior to the beginning of your programme.

An email will be issued to you by June 5th with the dates for the cultural programme and a provisional timetable will also be made available to you. Your final itinerary for both class and the cultural programme will be issued to you during your Orientation on June 10th. Please note that as part of your internship programme you will be travelling with UCD to Belfast and Galway as well as to sites of cultural importance in and around Dublin. The cultural itinerary will be issued to you before your arrival. Please note that one trip takes place over a full weekend, June 21st and 22nd.
