RARETYPE - Characterisation of rare river types

Under the Water Framework Directive all surface waterbodies must achieve at least good status and those at high quality must not be allowed to deteriorate. Ecological status is determined by comparison with reference conditions.

Reference conditions are type specific and so all waterbodies must be placed into types. Currently there are 12 river types defined in Ireland.

RARETYPE is a research fellowship tasked with characterising the biological communities of rare or unusual river types in Ireland.

This work is supported by the Environmental Protection Agency.
