
The University is located in the eastern suburbs of the famous South China city - Guangzhou (Canton). Its campus occupies more than 200 hectares, which presents a magnificent view of hills and lakes with buildings of both the Chinese traditional and modern styles.
South China University of Technology was established during the readjustment of all the higher education institutions in China in 1952, on the basis of the amalgamation of the technical colleges of Zhongshan University, Lingnan University, South China Joint University, Guangdong Industrial Training School, and other relevant colleges. On the 17th of November 1952, the ceremony was held to celebrate the establishment of SCUT.
With priority given to engineering with the combination of science and technology, the University has specialities in mechanical egineering, architecture, architectural engineering, marine technology and oceanic engineering, radio engineering, power engineering, automation, computer science and applications, chemical engineering, chemical equipment, polymer materials, inorganic materials, light chemical engineering, food engineering, applied sciences, management engineering, social sciences and foreign languages.
The scientific research of SCUT involves extensive fields from basic theories to applied sciences. Many research projects have been awarded prizes at the national, ministrial and provincial levels. The achievements of these research projects have found immediate application to industries.
In recent years, SCUT has established long term academic cooperation with more than ten universities in the United States, the UK, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong and Macao. A large number of graduates are now studying and working in these countries and other countries such as Canada, Australia, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Norway and France, this promotes further academic links between SCUT and these countries.
