What are the different options of awards for Undergraduate Honours Bachelor Degree programmes?

- Honours bachelor degree with a major in a particular subject
- Honours bachelor degree with a joint major in those subjects
- Honours bachelor degree with a major/minor subject combination
(General Regulation 6.1)
What is an honours bachelor degree with a major?
An honours bachelor degree with a major occurs when a student graduates from an honours bachelor degree programme and 5/6 or more of the programme credits awarded in the final and/or penultimate stages of the programme are in a single subject. This amounts to a minimum of 100 credits total in a single subject. A major in a subject will be indicated on the transcript by appending the name of the subject, in parentheses, to the name of the award, e.g. BA (French). The programme is considered a single honours programme.

This amounts to a minimum of 50 credits in each of the two subjects. A joint major in two subjects will be indicated on the transcript by appending the names of the subjects, in parentheses, conjoined by the word “and” to the name of the award, e.g. BSc (Biochemistry and Chemistry). The programme is considered a joint honours programme.
(General Regulation 6.1.2)

(General Regulation 6.1.3)
How will awards be classified for undergraduate degree programmes?
The Programme Examination Board will classify the overall award of an honours bachelor degree programme based on the degree GPA. The degree GPA is calculated using one of three modes, depending on the programme:
- Final Stage only – the award GPA is the weighted average of the grade points awarded for the final successful attempt at those modules which have been completed and passed to satisfy the credit requirements of the final stage, where the grade point for each module is weighted by the credit value of the module. (General Regulation 6.2.1)
- Final and penultimate stages - the award GPA is the weighted average of the grade points awarded for the final successful attempt at those modules which have been completed and passed to satisfy the credit requirements of the final and penultimate stages, where the grade point for each module is weighted by the credit value of the module (General Regulation 6.2.2)
- Final and penultimate stages (stage - weighted) – the award GPA is the weighted average of the grade points awarded for the final successful attempt at those modules which have been completed and passed to satisfy the credit requirements of the final and penultimate stages, where the grade points of final stage modules are weighted by a factor of 7 and those of penultimate stage modules are weighted by a factor of 3. (General Regulation 6.2.3)
The Programme Examination Board will not award Honours in individual subjects within an Honours Bachelor Degree. (General Regulation 6.2.4)
Information on each undergraduate degree programme’s Honours Calculation may be obtained from the relevant Programme Office. Contact details for Programme Offices can be found at: http://www.ucd.ie/programmeoffices.htm
How will awards be classified for graduate taught programmes?
The Programme Examination Board will classify the overall awards of a Graduate Taught Programme based on an award GPA.
(General Regulation 6.2)
When a student has successfully completed a programme, a award GPA is calculated. The award GPA is used to classify the overall award of a graduate taught degree programme. It is calculated based on all modules from, which the student completed and passed to satisfy the credit requirements of the programme, where the grade-point for each module is weighted by the credit value of the module. Where the programme is completed in two stages, the grades from both stages contribute to the award GPA.
(General Regulation 6.2.5)
